Summary of Duties:

Simulation technician provides instructional support services in the experiential education simulation center and assists faculty in the development of instruction for the simulation center.

Job Duties:

55% Classroom Support

  • Assist Simulation Operations Specialist and faculty with planning simulation assignments and schedules. 
  • Assist with day-to-day simulations, including setup and takedown for all activities in the Simulation Center including; staging rooms, mannequin preparation resetting simulation rooms for next day simulations. 
  • Provide mannequin support during simulation events for students and faculty.  
  • Manage and maintain operational functionality of all audio, video and networking devices in the Simulation Center.  
  • Provide recommendations on integration of new equipment and technology while assessing use of simulation resources.  
  • Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain task trainers, mannequin-based simulators, computerized simulators, virtual reality, procedural trainers, audio/video and networking devices, and associated supplies and equipment.  
  • Prepare for simulation experiences, including obtaining required supplies, restocking, and cleaning supplies in the simulation lab.  
  • Provide support for Simulation Center tours and simulation sessions for external customers.  
  • Maintain and support the structure of the simulation center.

30% Simulation Center AV/IT Systems Setup, Configuration and Simulation Support

  • Provide technical support for computer-based multimedia systems and their components, including operation of digital cameras, video cameras, beds/examination tables, patient monitors/vital sign monitors, and other health care equipment.  
  • Operate video, audio and patient simulator equipment and software.  
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware, software, network, and audiovisual technology issues related to the simulated patient technology systems; escalate and route complex problems to higher level experts; keep the director appraised of support delays and unexpected time-to-resolution.  
  • Troubleshoot technology issues for faculty, students and staff.  
  • Maintain current knowledge of simulation equipment catalogs and operations manuals.  
  • Conduct routine maintenance of all simulation equipment including cleaning and repairing of equipment and mannequins to ensure all resources are in good working condition.  
  • Conduct routine equipment inventory updates and equipment purchase recommendations.  
  • Interface with the equipment manufacturers regarding equipment troubleshooting and system problems; maintain record of repairs.  
  • Maintain record of repairs required and completed. Develop a regular schedule for preventative maintenance on all Simulation Center technologies including mannequins, task trainers, computers and other multimedia technologies.  
  • Repair simulation equipment or arrange to have equipment repaired by other personnel or an outside vendor, if unable to repair internally. 
  • Maintain computer licenses, software, configuration and mannequin integration.  
  • Provide and coordinate installation and configuration of all information, instructional and multimedia technology equipment in the Simulation Center.  
  • Assist with acquisition and install of any digital audiovisual hardware and software systems to record simulation sessions with subsequent editing and transfer into an archival format for analysis.  
  • Install software and hardware upgrades and maintain functionality of mannequin components as directed manufacturer support. 

10% Record Keeping and Procurement

  • Consult with Simulation Operations Specialist and Director to estimate quantity of supplies and materials needed for simulation.  
  • Maintain and restock inventory in all simulation rooms.  
  • Assist the Simulation Operations Specialist and Lab Manager with maintaining inventory and ordering equipment/ supplies for student learning activities within budgetary limitations.  
  • Assist the Simulation Operations Specialist and Director to reconcile course budgets.  
  • Assist with electronic inventory of all equipment and mannequins housed in the center.  
  • Collaborates with the Business Office staff to ensure that regular maintenance on all equipment occurs in a timely manner.  
  • Maintain student records, evaluations, checklists, and other required lists. 

5% Other

  • Participate in technical training; attend conferences as directed to stay current with simulation technologies, operations and support.  
  • Perform other job-related duties as needed. 

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree with major study in specific instructional area; or equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and three years relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, and evaluate patient simulation scenarios.
  • Ability to handle all situations with tact, professionalism, and diplomacy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to represent simulation resources to clients and external constituencies.
  • Capable of working with actors who serve as standardized patients.
  • Strong project management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience soliciting and interpreting requirements from end users (faculty, staff, etc with vendor engineers for development or enhancement of systems.
  • Knowledge about function, setup, and operation of clinical equipment (such as high-fidelity patient monitors).
  • Medical knowledge and/or medical background.
  • Knowledge and experience with computers, AV systems, networking and other technologies and the ability to troubleshoot when systems are not functioning properly.
  • Able to function in a nursing school environment and provide good customer service to students, staff, and faculty.
  • Knowledge of adult learning theory.
