Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

The Research Assistant is responsible for performing work in support of scientific research, which provides practical experience in the sleep and performance research field. The top priority in this position is supporting the faculty team members in running studies. This includes but is not limited to: data collection, which includes working with participants and processing the data, and performing literature reviews. Additionally, this position has many diverse types of work beyond the top priorities so flexibility and organizational skills are necessary. Professionalism is expected.
This is a project position and is expected to end on April 1, 2022. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension to complete the project.

75% Study Coordination

  • Helping run all studies conducted in the lab with a primary focus on data collection and inputting data into the main research database.  
  • This position may include using mathematical modeling for safety cases and any other request by the funders.
  • Train participants, primarily commercial airline pilots, on the techniques and procedures needed for them to participate in our studies; obtain informed consent; contacting participating pilots during a data collection period; troubleshooting with pilots; download data and perform data reduction; perform data quality control; schedule pilots and equipment and manage study logistics; send study packages; manage confidential subject and payment data; obtain confidential pilot information from carrier; secure data and manage data back-ups and transfers; trouble-shoot problems independently and in discussion with research team; communicate with research team daily; keep all tasks organized and input all study information promptly; keep detailed notes and records.
  • Additionally, assist with any IRB submissions or requests, as needed. 

20% Maintain Electronic and Paper Files

  • Answer phones, and assist visitors and study participants.
  • Reduce data, review literature, and contribute to report writing and assist in preparing manuscripts for journals or presentations for conferences. Possibly present results in the form of an abstract, poster, oral presentation or book chapter.
  • Use advanced skills to coordinate sleep studies in-field: monitor sleep recordings provide support for research volunteers; implement instructions of the research protocol; provide feedback and suggestions for modification of the study to the Senior Study Coordinator; help to recruit research volunteers.

5% Other

  • Perform other related work as required or assigned.


Required Qualifications:

Two years of college level course work in a relevant academic area AND one year of appropriate experience OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Excellent organizational and project management skills. 
  • Proactive individual that can work independently. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. 
  • Experimental and analytical skills.
  • A statistics background is preferable.
