Summary of Duties:

The Research Intern will provide support to the Ahmed lab in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences by conducting research and collection of data in support of the study of mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases including arthritis. The individual will accomplish this through complex laboratory/scientific experiments such as performing primary cell culture experiments, and dosing and handling of mice and rats.
 

In addition, this position will also be responsible for maintaining scientific instruments, purchasing laboratory supplies, performing laboratory administrative duties, and other duties as assigned.

Job Duties:

70% Laboratory Research

  • Assist PI with research on primary human cell cultures. 
  • Perform research techniques including tissue culture, western immunoblotting and protein analyses.
  • Prepare samples for mRNA analysis.
  • Appropriately gather and record data and research findings. 
  • Verify accuracy of research data.
  • Perform calculations, analyze and prepare charts, graphs and summaries for informal and formal presentations. 
  • Attend and present during regular laboratory meetings.

25% Laboratory Maintenance

  • Monitor, order, and stock lab supplies.
  • Assist with inventory maintenance.
  • Participate with washing dishes and laboratory cleaning.
  • Maintain safe laboratory environment at all times.
  • Properly dispose of laboratory waste, biomedical waste, broken glassware, and any other hazardous materials.
  • Keep laboratory clean and organized.

5% Miscellaneous

  • Other appropriate duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent related field experience performing professional-level work with scientific or clinical research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.


Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; interviewing experience; excellent organizational and project management skills.

Additional Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacology or Pharmaceutical Sciences with preferred focus on biological sciences or applicable related sciences. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with common laboratory procedures, ordering, and standardization of protocols. 
  • Experience with basic research design.                                 
  • Experience with cell culture.  
  • Experience in immunoblotting and techniques such as cell staining, tissue processing, and RT-PCR. 
  • Relevant research in the field of arthritis or cardiovascular diseases, culture of primary cells of human or animal origin. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Computer proficiency related to research.
