Position Details:

CHARGE jcdream.org/about/charge is a small, fast-paced startup type organization within the Washington State University system, offering the best of both worlds when it comes to employment. We have the variety, excitement and nimble nature of a startup paired with the community, collaboration, and excellent benefits that come with State employment.

The Consortium for Hydrogen and Renewably Generated E-Fuels (CHARGE) is a collaborative effort bringing together industry leaders, policy makers, researchers, and educators to transform clean energy and heavy-duty transportation in Washington state. Formed under the umbrella of JCDREAM, CHARGE aims to create and enable collaborations that will develop and deploy next-generation technologies to ensure that our members and Washington state leads globally in the green hydrogen and low carbon e-fuel economy.

The Joint Center for Deployment and Research in Earth Abundant Materials (JCDREAM) promotes research into new technologies using earth-abundant materials to provide industrial supply-chain security, economic sustainability and sound environmental stewardship. As an umbrella organization of JCDREAM, CHARGE is working to leverage the clean, low-cost energy available in Washington state into a hydrogen and low-carbon e-fuel economy that will provide energy security to the region and beyond with earth abundant materials, economic sustainability, and environmental stewardship at the forefront of the conversation.

We are hiring a Business Development Manager to join the team. This individual will align the industry sectors – who currently lack robust business relationships – and form the founding project teams to demonstrate commercialization of new hydrogen and e-fuel technology and markets. These teams will be created from companies ranging across many sectors and including but not limited to electric power utilities, transportation OEM’s, transportation operators, logistics companies, port authorities, data center operators, e-commerce companies, hydrogen and/or e-fuel producers, fuel cell and/or electrolyzer companies, fuel distribution and handling companies, technology and system integration companies, and research institutions.

Who do we need?
You are passionate about good stewardship of the environment, interested in clean energy sciences and engineering and you love using your skills to build business relationships and projects in order to advance positive changes. You have been looking for a job where you can make a difference – on your team and in the world. You are detail-oriented, friendly, and are skilled at interacting and communicating with varied audiences. You are a quick study – you like to learn about unfamiliar technologies and concepts, and you dive into new software tools that help get the job done.

We believe that the experience needed to succeed in this position will come from a mix of technical experience and business chops. If you have an engineering or other STEM degree and professional experience including but not limited to sales, product management, business development, or customer success you could be a great fit. Applicants with knowledge of hydrogen, fuel cells, electrolyzers, power systems, specialty gas handling and infrastructure, chemical engineering or chemical processes will also have an excellent technical foundation for this role. We provide these lists not to exclude any possible applicants, but to provide additional context to the role.

What is the job?
The Business Development Manager will be responsible for fostering business relationships within the CHARGE cluster. We will need to work to identify new supply chains, shared value propositions, innovation and technology sharing relationships, and joint development projects. Eventually, these joint projects will culminate in full-scale commercial operations which do not exist anywhere in the world currently. Establishing all of this and especially building project teams will require technical knowledge of this field, but also business acumen and relationship skills.

The Business Development Manager plans and manages financial reporting and business support services for CHARGE. They oversee the development and maintenance of information and reporting systems, participate in the overall administrative management of the operation, and represent the Executive Director, as required.

For CHARGE, business development exists at the nexus of technological synergy, relationships, and business opportunity. This position is crucial to enabling the aim of CHARGE: to build successful business opportunities by organizing members into project teams able to garner funding. The Business Development Manager will work closely with The Executive Director, The Communication Specialist, and the Membership Coordinator to leverage existing communication tools and member information to understand member needs, wants, and potential synergies in order to promote business opportunities for CHARGE members. The Business Development Manager will report directly to the Executive Director.

Positions assigned to this class are responsible for strategic planning, consulting, research and/or development within a project specialty and serve as subject-matter experts.  Duties typically include consulting; plan development and implementation; market research; data analysis; training/mentoring; program evaluation; marketing and outreach; and may supervise staff.
