Summary of Duties:

The Functional Genomics Initiative at Washington State University (WSU) is a multimillion dollar investment to establish the institution as a leader in the application of genome editing of animals for the advancement of biomedical research and improvement of animal agriculture. A major aspect of the Functional Genomics Initiative is the recruitment of several new tenure-track faculty with research programs in strategic areas that align with current core strengths of the existing faculty body. Over the past three years, six faculty have been hired as part of the initiative in the areas of reproductive and developmental biology, growth and muscle biology, and bioethics. The initiative has also built core research service laboratories for single cell omics analysis, CRISPRCas9 reagent generation, and animal production. The new hires have taken advantage of newly developed infrastructure to launch their research programs and operate at the leading edge of technology for chosen fields of interest. All newly recruited investigators have the opportunity to interact with existing WSU faculty in biomedical research to forge new collaborations through the formal structure of centers for research excellence in the colleges of Veterinary Medicine (Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology, School of Molecular Biosciences, and Center for Reproductive Biology), Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (Department of Animal Sciences), and Arts and Sciences (School of Politics, Philosophy, and Public Affairs). With the current notice of vacancy, the initiative aims to add yet another star to the faculty ranks that will have opportunity for forging multidisciplinary collaborations to devise approaches for conferring resistance in animals to infectious disease causing agents.

This Assistant/Associate/Full Professor position is defined as approximately 75% research/graduate education, 20% teaching, and 5% university service. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain a productive, extramurally funded research program in the area of infectious diseases. Candidates with an ongoing or future commitment to disease resistance, the application of gene editing technologies, an interest in food/fiber-producing animals, large animal models, and/or poultry are encouraged to apply. The research area should be compatible with existing research focuses on infectious diseases. These include vector-borne, zoonotic, viral, bacterial, and protozoal diseases.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish effective collaborations with current WSU programs and be active in the college’s graduate program, including mentoring graduate students and serving as a member of student advisory committees. The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in teaching at the graduate, and/or veterinary professional level and to be active in the academic service arena. The Department:

The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology is one of five departments/schools in the College of Veterinary Medicine. The departmental mission is “to enhance animal and public health through teaching veterinary and graduate students, training veterinary pathology and microbiology residents, and conducting biomedical research in infectious diseases and immunology”. The department takes pride in what we believe is an environment that fosters collaboration, creativity, personal and professional growth, and productivity. Although few faculty members are intensively involved in all three traditional missions of teaching, research, and service, we value and seek excellence in each. The WSU Functional Genomics Initiative fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary research. This includes units in the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Department of Animal Sciences in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences, and the Center for Reproductive Biology, an inter-institutional center involving 26 departments from WSU and seven other universities.

Required Qualifications:

A doctoral degree (PhD, DVM, or MD) in biomedical science or related field is required by the time of hire. A minimum of three years of productive post-doctoral research experience in infectious disease. Candidates at all ranks must have demonstrated abilities in conducting hypothesis-based research and publishing high quality papers in top tier journals, a track record of, or strong potential for attracting extramural funding, and a history or interest in contributing to high quality graduate and/or veterinary education. The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to excellence by providing leadership in research, teaching, or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.
