Summary of Duties:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate is to design research activities to develop molecular assays to detect and quantify emerging pathogens of pome fruit in the U.S. Pacific Northwest to improve disease management decision making, left phytosanitary barriers, and increase competitiveness of a multi-billion industry in the Pacific Northwest. The ideal applicant is knowledgeable in both in molecular biology and mycology, and is skilled in molecular techniques, including DNA and RNA-based technology. The project aim is to develop lab and field portable assays to ease detection, facilitate a better understanding of the epidemiology of major emerging fungal pathogen, and improve the use of IPM-based approaches to abate infections pre and postharvest. This person will work closely with industry stakeholders, i.e., growers, packers, exporters, and phytosanitary agencies to provide outreach and education material for the implementation of the developed assays. In addition to conducting research, the incumbent is expected to serve a role in training undergraduate and graduate students, keep records related to research projects, synthesize data, present results at local and national conferences, and prepare and publish scientific manuscripts. The individual must be self-motivated, work under minimal supervision, and work with a wide range of backgrounds. Some in-state and regional travel will be expected.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
85% (E) Research and Informal instruction
Lead research activities pertaining to the development of molecular assays to detect and quantify emerging pathogens of pome fruit in the U.S. Pacific Northwest to improve disease management decision making, left phytosanitary barriers, and increase competitiveness of a multi-billion industry in the Pacific Northwest. Responsibilities include, but not limited to 1) design and conduct lab and field experiments and related research, 2) collect, organize, and analyze data 3) summarize data for publication in peer-reviewed and extension journals, 4) present findings at commodity and professional meetings, 5) keep lab, office, and storage room spaces clean, tidy and safe for others to use.
5% (E) Supervise
Supervise undergraduate and graduate students as well as hourly employees in conducting research projects in a manner that enhances their academic development.
10% (E) Extension
Conduct technology transfer of research findings to multiple stakeholders through outreach non-technical talks and extension publications. Participate in college and university committees; evaluate research proposals and grants.

Required Qualifications:
PhD. in Plant Pathology, Mycology, Molecular biology, or related scientific fields obtained within 5 years of the start date.
Strong demonstrated background in molecular techniques and demonstrated technical experience with fungi.
The successful candidate should demonstrate full attention to detail, excellent record keeping and ability to conduct statistical analyses.
The applicant must be exceptionally self-motivated, have excellent organizational, interpersonal and both oral and written communication skills.
The individual must have or be able to obtain a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience or expertise in LAMP and/or related molecular methods is highly desired but not required and training will be provided upon hire.
