Summary of Duties:

The Microbiologist 1 provides assistance to the faculty member(s) and manager in charge of the Molecular Diagnostics section of WADDL and the Pathogen Discovery Laboratory in the School for Global Animal Health. The incumbent assists in the daily functioning of the laboratory, ensuring that all laboratory test requests are attended to promptly, aiding in formulating and applying the Quality Assurance Program and ensuring adherence to standard operating procedures (SOP), conducting molecular diagnostics tests as required and participating in research, development and discovery efforts.  Eligibility and understanding of BSL-2 & 3 laboratory safety guidelines and work environment is required.


Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, zoology, or a related science; OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Physical eligibility required for working in a BSL-2 & 3 environment.  See the following link for more information: https://www.cdc.gov/training/QuickLearns/biosafety/

  • Must be able to and willing to work overtime and possibly travel to perform field work in the event of a disease outbreak.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in diagnostic microbiology

  • A Bachelor's degree in molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry or a related science field.

  • Demonstrated skills and knowledge in: isolation of DNA from tissue and body fluids/samples; use of PCR in identification of microbial agents; DNA sequencing and sequence analysis.

  • Experience working with zoonotic agents in appropriate biosafety levels. Knowledge of infectious diseases.

  • Experience with and ability to enter names and number sequences accurately into a medical computer database. 

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
