Summary of Duties:

Under general supervision, the Laboratory Office Assistant provides support and exceptional customer service to submitting clients, laboratory personnel, graduate students, and faculty of the Avian Health and Food Safety Laboratory, including answering phone calls, and assisting drop ins. Duties include evaluating case submissions, including obtaining case information from AHFSL clients and entering data and test requests into the laboratory information management system (LIMS) database (VADDS).  Manage the business and fiscal functions of the AHFSL including purchasing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, expense review, filing systems, shipping, and facility maintenance. Eligibility and understanding of BSL-2 laboratory safety guidelines and work environment is required.


Required Qualifications:

High School graduation or equivalent and two years of clerical experience; OR equivalent education/experience.

Additional Requirements:

  • Physical eligibility required for working in a BioSafety Lab-2 (BSL-2) environment. See the following link for more information. https://www.cdc.gov/training/QuickLearns/biosafety/

  • Ability to work a rotating weekend duty/holidays when unexpected help is needed.

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written, and oral communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high volume data entry and data inquiry with minimal errors.

  • Demonstrated ability to work under continuous time constraints with a high attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated experience using VADDS or a similar medical and/or accounting database and software.

  • Experience with utilizing a Quality System and using and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Familiarity with veterinary medicine.
