Summary of Duties:

The Institute of Biological Chemistry seeks an attentive and enthusiastic individual to water and care for greenhouse and growth chamber research plants on a 30 hour week schedule. Must be willing and available to work weekends/holiday mornings if/when needed. 

                                                           

The Greenhouse Research Plant Technician position supports research and extension activities relating to the controlled environment research plants with the Institute of Biological Chemistry. The duties of this position include but are not limited to: the propagation, planting, and care of greenhouse plants. Plants typically are grown under greenhouse, growth chamber, and field conditions. The incumbent may lead part-time helpers and will be responsible for plant production activities, such as weeding, irrigating, fertilizing, pest management, and general care of plants.

The incumbent will be tasked with watering all research plants and monitoring environmental factors on daily basis, fertilizing, planting, cultivating, and maintaining plants; propagating (including transgenic) plants from seeds, cutting and grafting, pruning, staking, mixing of soils and transplanting or   thinning of plants; monitoring for pests and applying sprays, dusts or fumigation; harvesting, cleaning, treating and storing seeds; labeling plants and maintaining records using standard operating procedures; maintaining greenhouse tools and equipment; cleaning greenhouse and growth facilities, and related duties as required.


Required Qualifications:

  • High School graduation or GED certificate AND three years of work experience in plant research, propagation, or related work; OR equivalent education/experience.

  • Must have, or be able obtain at time of hire, a valid driver’s license.

  • Must possess a Washington State Pesticide Applicator’s License, or be able to obtain one within 6 months of hire.

  • Keep pesticide applicator’s license up to date, attending training as needed. 


Preferred Qualifications:.

  • Extensive knowledge of the cultural requirements of plants.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills.
