Dr. David Nelson and Dr. Keith Eshleman at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Appalachian Laboratory are seeking applications for a Graduate Research Assistant to participate in a project funded by Maryland Sea Grant Research (MDSG) that will evaluate the effectiveness of “green” stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in mitigating nitrogen loads in a rapidly urbanizing Chesapeake Bay watershed. The student will have opportunity to collect stable isotope, water chemistry, and hydrological data to test hypotheses about the function of GSI. This research has real-world application in terms of maintaining or improving water quality. The student will also have opportunity to participate in MDSG-sponsored professional development activities, including learning how to communicate science to diverse audiences.
Start Date: Summer or Fall 2022
Location: The UMCES Appalachian Laboratory provides a unique and research-focused educational experience for graduate students studying terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems throughout the world. The lab is in Frostburg, Maryland, a small college town with a low cost of living and abundant outdoor recreation opportunities. See https://www.umces.edu/al/about for more information about the Lab and surrounding community.
Qualification: BA, BS, or MS in earth science, hydrology, biology, ecology biogeochemistry, or related field.
Description: The assistantship will include a tuition waiver, benefits and a 12-month annual stipend of approximately $26,000. At least 2.0 years of support are available.
Program: The student will matriculate through the Marine Estuarine and Environmental Sciences (MEES) graduate program at the University of Maryland College Park.
