Summary of Duties:

The Digital Technology and Culture (DTC) program at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure track faculty position with a focus on Game Design and Development at the Assistant Professor rank. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2022. This position is located on the Pullman, WA campus.

The Digital Technology and Culture program is an interdisciplinary program within the College of Arts and Sciences emphasizing humanistic understandings of technology, publicly engaged research, and creative production emphasizing social justice, anti-racist pedagogies, and decolonial methodologies.  DTC faculty combine creative production and critical inquiry with an emphasis on community engagement in various formats. The DTC program is a growing unit with several undergraduate tracks and a graduate certificate. Students in any track in the program receive instruction on engaged practice and critical approaches to a wide breath of theory, technology, and media.

We are especially interested in candidates using digital technologies, computational methods and creative practices that cross disciplines and that explicitly examine issues related to systemic racism and structural inequities in many forms and modalities including critical play. The program values creative, collaborative, and publicly engaged scholarship that places an emphasis on explicitly anti-racist pedagogies, practices, and production in teaching, research, service, and scholarship that work to advance racial justice, reconciliation, and repair. The faculty member in this position will also be expected to assist in the refinement and expansion of the DTC program.

The successful applicant will teach undergraduate courses within their area of expertise, courses in the Game Studies track for DTC majors and students from across campus in the undergraduate Game Studies and Design certificate. They will also teach  within the introductory core undergraduate course curriculum (DTC 101: Introduction to Digital Technology and Culture, DTC 201: Methods for Digital Technology, and DTC 206: Digital Inclusion); teach within the graduate certificate in the unit; aid in the management and development of collaborative practices, spaces, and projects that engage the university and other publics; be an active part of the DTC faculty; engage in creative production and  research in their areas of expertise; and support current and emerging research, teaching, and creative activities in digital research on campus, to external communities, and within the region. The DTC program is committed to the retention of new faculty and as such the successful candidate will be provided with a faculty mentoring committee within the College of Arts and Sciences and have access to university programs such as the External Mentor Program (https://advance.wsu.edu/externalmentors/ ).


Required Qualifications:

1. MFA, MDe, MAD, MGraph, or Ph.D. in Game Studies, Integrative Technologies, Information Design, Digital Media, Media Arts, Interactive Media, Data Visualization, Interdisciplinary Humanities, Digital Humanities, or related area by time of appointment;

2. Successful classroom and/or individual instruction, mentorship or internship leadership;

3. Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds;

4. Emergent and productive research program or creative production appropriate to the position.

5. Emergent secondary area of specialization complimentary to the unit including, but not limited to, graphic design, visual communication and literacy, user experience/user interface design web design and development, and/or audio production.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Professional experience in game design and development, interactive media, immersive technologies, VR/AR/XR, or related technology industries;

2. Experience working in a studio, lab or collaborative production spaces, on collaborative projects, and/or within collaborative programs;

3. Commitment to retention of underrepresented students and student-success initiatives;

4. Experience with, or willingness to, teach online.
