Assistant Professor-Geochemistry
The George Mason University Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Earth Sciences (AOES) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position starting August 2022. Priority will be given to those at the rank of Assistant Professor, but applications from those at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor may be considered. Responsibilities:
We seek an innovative scholar with broad expertise in low-temperature geochemistry. Preferred research areas include, but are not limited to: paleoclimatology, marine chemistry/paleoceanography, aqueous geochemistry, isotope geochemistry, and/or the critical zone, particularly focusing on the use of (bio)geochemical records to investigate reciprocal interactions among the lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere in modern and deep-time systems.
The successful candidate will develop a rigorous, externally-funded research program, seek multidisciplinary collaborations, and use innovative field and analytical techniques in their research and teaching of undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching will be at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including geochemistry and other courses in their areas of expertise. An eagerness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and backgrounds is essential. A Ph.D. is required by the time of employment.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in natural sciences or related discipline;
- Ability to develop partnerships with regional institutions such as the USGS, Carnegie Institution for Science, or Smithsonian Institution.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated record of teaching at the college level and a strong research background.

Faculty and students in our department conduct high quality, rigorous research on pressing problems, and work to disseminate knowledge in both academic and non-academic circles.
The department offers undergraduate degrees in Geology and Atmospheric Sciences, M.S. degrees in Earth Systems Science and Climate Science, and a Ph.D. in Climate Dynamics.
