The College of Arts and Sciences at Washington State University invites applications for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry is committed to research excellence through rigorous classroom preparation and mentorship by world-renowned faculty to produce fundamental scientific knowledge and understanding that impacts society. The Department performs research in the following broadly defined areas: Chemistry of Biological Systems, Chemistry of Materials, and Chemistry of Energy and the Environment. All research areas include a strong presence in Physical and Computational Chemistry, Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical and Environmental Chemistry and Radiochemistry. The Department’s research activities have important applications in energy, contemporary technology, national security, human health, and other areas of national need.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION

• Appointment is anticipated at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank in Chemistry at the WSU-Pullman campus.

• Permanent, full-time (9-month), tenure track academic position at the Pullman Campus.  Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

• Effective date:  August 16, 2022 or later (pre-appointments will be considered).

EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and maintain an innovative, competitive, vigorous, and nationally and internationally recognized research program in Chemical Biology and its application to human health. Appointments made at the Associate rank must satisfy the expectations outlined within the WSU Faculty Manual.

• Establish and maintain external research funding in support of the research program.

• Advise high quality graduate and undergraduate research.

• Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry.

• Participate in course, laboratory, and curriculum development in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry.

• Participate in recruitment of highly qualified students into the Department of Chemistry.

• Participate in Departmental, College and University faculty activities.

• Contribute to the diversity and excellence of the university community through teaching, research, and/or service.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

• A Ph.D. in Chemical Biology or a closely related discipline (e.g., Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, or Biochemistry).

• 12-months of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.

• The successful candidate must be qualified to teach at both the graduate and undergraduate level, related areas of organic chemistry, biochemistry and chemical biology, and in the general chemistry program. The potential for developing excellent teaching skills is essential.

• Excellent spoken and written communication skills.

• The ability to excel in a culturally diverse environment and contribute to the diversity and excellence of the university community through teaching, research, and/or service.

• Application materials at the Assistant level must provide evidence for the potential to establish and maintain an outstanding academic research program in Chemical Biology at WSU (e.g., first-authored peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals).

• Applications at the Associate rank must, additionally from the criteria above, demonstrate a history of successful grantsmanship and an existing outstanding research program.

Preferred:

• Experience in research related to human health.

• Potential for synergy within the Department and greater campus research community.
