Summary of Duties:

The Assistant Director is responsible for oversight and management of all administration functions within the National Center for Transportation Infrastructure Durability and Life-Extension (TriDurLE) including: outreach development, budgeting, business affairs, research project management, technical writing, outside contracts, and coordination of the day-to-day administrative support of activities. The incumbent will have an in-depth understanding of the field of engineering and will serve as  a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and be able to act on behalf of the national Director and serve as the primary point of operational and administrative contact for internal and external constituencies. Under general supervision, the incumbent must utilize independent judgement to determine and develop avenues by which program reports, presentations, and abstracts of published papers are disseminated to designated stakeholders and the general public. The incumbent will be responsible for conducting surveys and interviews of industry practitioners, as well as contributing to the development of scholarly manuscripts, technical proposals, and e-newsletters. This is a 24-month, temporary, Administrative Professional position expected to start in October 2021 and end in December 2023.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.

  • A M.Sc.’s degree in Civil Engineering or a relevant field and at least three (3) years of progressively responsible relevant experience. A Ph.D. degree in a related field may be substituted for up to two (2) year of the required experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.  

  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated computer software skills, including the ability to use Microsoft Office programs, such as: Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access.

  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and applying rules, policies and procedures. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience performing professional-level work with engineering research. 

  • A solid publication record in related field(s). 

  • Strong problem-solving skills and people skills. 

  • Experience in strategic planning, formulation, design, implementation and tracking.
