Summary of Duties:

The Retention Specialist works to plan and administer a university system-wide retention plan for international students and scholars. It orchestrates International Center programs, events and services that strategically align with helping international students and scholars successfully navigate the U.S. university environment by finding community on campus and with the local area. This position works to remove social, cultural, linguistic and other barriers to international student and scholar success with expertise in immigration, academics, student affairs and related areas. It leads international orientation, international career workshops series and manages relationships across the university with the interests of the international community in mind.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. Experience leading or directing the work of others. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

  • A bachelor’s degree in Linguistics, Student Affairs, Higher Education, International Education, Leadership or a closely related field.

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Designated School Official.

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working at a public, tier-1 research university.

  • Demonstrated understanding of higher education.

  • Previous experience with retention as it relates to immigration regulations, academic regulations and University policy.

  • Direct experience with student conduct including plagiarism.

  • Minimum of two years’ experience with social, cultural programming, events and activities.

  • Ability to think analytically and solve problems.

  • Direct experience with programming for retention.

  • Direct experience with career services.

  • Demonstrated understanding of retention theory, practice and application in higher education.

  • High level of proficiency with social media platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Linguistics, Student Affairs, Higher Education, International Education, Leadership or a closely related field.

  • Bilingual

  • Significant experience traveling, living or teaching abroad.

  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to plan and executive a system-wide retention plan.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with social media.

  • Significant experience with holistic advising.

  • Demonstrated experience working with students in crisis.

  • Previous experience with student involvement as it relates to the international community.

  • Leadership experience with NAFSA, IIE or other international education organizations.

  • High level of proficiency with technology.

  • Super verbal and written communication skills.

  • Experience in or leading peer mentor groups.

  • Experience in or leading international tutorials/orientations.

  • Experience working with international scholars including faculty/post-docs.

Additional Information:

Monthly Salary: Commensurate with Qualifications and Experience
