Summary of Duties:

The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering (VSCEB) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for up to three full-time, tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant or associate rank commensurate with qualifications at WSU Pullman, WA campus. We anticipate these new hires will assist VSCEB at WSU to further grow our vibrant research and educational programs. We strongly encourage applicants from groups underrepresented in engineering to apply for the positions.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a dynamic, externally-funded, nationally recognized research program, teach core and elective undergraduate and graduate courses in chemical engineering and/or bioengineering using traditional and/or newly emerging educational approaches, mentor a diverse group of students, perform internal and professional service at a level commensurate with rank, and publish scholarly work. VSCEB welcomes strong candidates who can complement departmental strengths in catalysis, electrochemically active systems for energy conversion and health, and molecular and cellular bioengineering, collaborating with existing research programs within the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA) and other units at WSU, as well as those at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The areas of research include but are not limited, to (1) Advanced surface analysis for chemically, biologically, or electrochemically active catalytic systems; (2) Artificial Intelligence for the design of electrochemically active systems; (3) Biocatalyst engineering, leading to new synergistic understanding of biological and heterogeneous catalysts; (4) Advanced separation systems, or (5) Other research areas that complement existing strengths. Priority will be given to candidates whose work shows significant promise and the potential to complement and uniquely strengthen existing programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field prior to start of the appointment.

  • Ability to teach core chemical engineering and/or bioengineering classes.

  • Commitment to collaborate with diverse internal and external groups.

  • Candidates for the Assistant Professor position must have a demonstrated record of scholarly work and potential to establish a robust nationally-recognized, extramurally funded research program that complements and uniquely strengthens existing program(s) within the school.

  • Candidates for the Associate Professor position must have a track record commensurate with rank including continued extramural research funding, publication of high-impact work in top-tier journals, evidence of effective teaching, and a commitment to meaningful service.

Additional Information:
The individual hired for this position will join existing faculty members in the VSCEB. As of Fall 2021, 177 ChE and 160 BE undergraduate (BS) students, 11 MS students and 56 PhD students are enrolled in programs offered by the VSCEB. We currently graduate about 75 BS students and 12 graduate students each year. We plan to grow our undergraduate and graduate programs through new and innovative research and educational offerings. WSU is among 108 public and private U.S. universities recognized by the Carnegie Foundation with the “very high research activity” categorization and among 240 universities and colleges nationwide to earn the “community engagement” classification from the Carnegie Foundation. The VSCEB has an exceptionally strong focus in the development and use of catalysis for energy and environmental applications, with 6 faculty working in this area. We also have strengths in electrochemical energy conversion, protein and tissue engineering, and electrically active biofilm systems. We house a unique operando XPS system, as well as operando XRD, Raman and other surface analysis systems. Our chemical engineering and bioengineering faculty are integral to one of the nation’s longest running, NIGMS-sponsored PhD training programs, which is focused on protein biotechnology.

The position will be located at the WSU/Pullman campus. The city of Pullman is nestled among the rolling wheat fields of southeastern Washington and offers a small-town charm with a low crime rate and an excellent K-12 school system. Pullman was named by Bloomberg Business Week as the best place in Washington to raise your children. For more information on WSU and the VSCEB, visit our home page at http://www.voiland.wsu.edu/ .
