Summary of Duties:

The successful applicant will be expected to provide clinical services, primarily in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH), to a variety of livestock operations including beef (cow-calf and feedlot), dairy, small ruminant, camelids and swine. The position may include expectations for clinical and didactic instruction of veterinary students, interns, and residents, and collaborative or independent research/scholarship within the candidate’s area of interest. This position will involve communication with practitioners, owners and farm workers, as well as collaborative work with colleagues in the CVM and the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resources Sciences (CAHNRS). The successful applicant must be able to effectively communicate and work with people of diverse backgrounds.

Required Qualifications:

• Candidates must have a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or foreign equivalent degree (such as a BVSc) by the time of hire and demonstrated experience in an advanced clinical training program or multiple years of experience practicing food animal medicine.

• The successful applicant must demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with internal and external constituents.

• A record of peer-reviewed scholarship appropriate to rank (Assistant or Associate) is expected.  

• Applicants for Associate Professor must have a significant record of scholarship, a higher level of national/international recognition, and a higher level of clinical and teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Board certification or board-eligibility in a large animal/ag animal specialty (including American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine-Large Animal (LA-ACVIM); American Board of Veterinary Practitioner (ABVP) Dairy, Beef, or Food Animal Practice; American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine (ACVPM)) at the time of hire is desirable.  

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clinical Service/Teaching :  

• The individual will be responsible for in-hospital clinical instruction and supervising veterinary students, interns, and residents while providing in-hospital veterinary service to the community, the livestock units at WSU and University of Idaho (including shared after-hours emergency duty and back-up for interns and residents). There may be opportunities for leading experiential student learning rotations on cooperating livestock operations in the region. Other teaching responsibilities may include participation in lecture courses, discussions, and case-based learning and laboratories in the DVM and graduate programs. Teaching opportunities may include didactic and laboratory courses in large animal nutrition, internal medicine, surgery, epidemiology and/or population medicine.

Research/Scholarship :

• The faculty member will actively engage in collaborative or independent scholarly pursuits to address relevant food animal industry research needs.  This program could include applied, field-based, collaborative and multi-disciplinary research. Expectations for scholarly productivity and extramural support, as well as for engaging in graduate student training, will be consistent with qualifications and appropriate to rank.

Service :

• Departmental/University and/or public service through committee work, participation in professional organizations, and extension/outreach is expected.

The Agricultural Animal (Ag Animal) and Field Disease Investigation Units (FDIU) consist of individuals engaged in didactic and clinical teaching, research, field investigations and outreach pertaining to important agricultural animal species.  Research programs in the units are focused on three integrated themes: food and waterborne disease with an emphasis on antimicrobial resistance, animal well-being, and livestock data management and analysis systems. Ag Animal and FDIU are closely affiliated with the Theriogenology Service, the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, the Paul G. Allen School for Global Health, the Animal Health Research Center, the USDA Animal Disease Research Unit, the Department of Animal Sciences in CAHNRS, the Center for Reproductive Biology, and WSU Extension. These units have a history of highly successful collaboration in interactive field and laboratory based research programs, diagnostics, and implementation of disease control methods.

The mission of VCS is to improve animal and human health and well-being through clinical service, education, and the dissemination of new knowledge. VCS and the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) are closely aligned in this mission, with over 65 full-time faculty members and 170 staff and house officers.
