Summary of Duties:

The primary responsibility of the position is to carry an academic advising load reflecting a diverse undergraduate student population and to provide support and education to enhance each student’s learning experience at WSU
 

The majority of the duties include, but are not limited to, assisting students with course scheduling and registration; developing individual academic plans and educating students in the areas of academic planning; interpretation of degree, school, college and university requirements; career exploration and other related matters; counseling non-SDC students about possible admission to academic programs; and providing academic planning advice for prospective transfer students. 
 

The position has additional duties outside of student advisement essential to the effective operation of academic programs at the SDC, such as, participating in program development for academic advising; providing coordination and support for recruitment and retention activities; and contributing to the management of program data collection and assessment activities. 


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of full-time academic advising experience at a college or university or related education/experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year‐for‐year basis.

  • Excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills. 

  • Demonstrated experience with computer software and programs, specifically the Microsoft Office suite, and ability to learn new software and programs quickly. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and positively in a diverse team environment. Must possess strong organizational and time management skills. 

  • Willingness and ability to travel and work evening or weekend hours as necessary for recruitment activities.

  • Experience with academic advising and related issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver engaging and informative presentations to students and parents.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience creating database queries and generating reports.

  • Understanding of, and ability to apply, WSU policies and procedures as related to student records and degree program requirements.

  • Knowledge of university computing systems such as the myWSU Advising Module and Oracle Business Intelligence (OBIEE).

  • Previous work experience at an institution of higher education.

  • Experience with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.

  • Master’s degree in related field and more than 2 years of full-time experience with academic advising.
