- Austin Zoo is currently recruiting for one part-time Zoo Educator to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Educators are responsible for leading field trip programs, outreach programs, Boy and Girl Scout workshops, and homeschool programs. Additionally, the educator will engage guests on zoo grounds through exhibit interpretation, biofacts, and animal encounters. This position involves regular animal care duties and handling of a variety of small animals. RESPONSIBILITIES: • Demonstrate and encourage respect of animals during education programs and animal encounters • Enthusiastically engage visitors in inquiry-based learning activities • Engage zoo guests in strategically framed discussions regarding conservation and animal welfare. • Assist with daily animal care duties to maintain clean, healthy and enriching animal ambassador habitats • Assist with program development • Other duties as assigned
- Qualifications
- Experience and Education: Completion or pursuit of a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, or related field from an accredited college or university; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Previous animal care experience strongly desired. Previous youth program experience strongly desired. Skills and Aptitudes: • Demonstrate a strong interest and/or experience in environmental education • Enjoy working with children of all ages and abilities. • Ability to adapt and make quick, responsible decisions and improvise when needed • Display a high level of patience and respond well under pressure • Comfortable speaking in front of large groups of people • Enthusiastic, creative, adaptable, patient, and able to work both independently and with a team Additional Requirements: • At least 18 years old • Ability to work outdoors under various weather conditions • Successful completion of a background check
