Description
MISSION STATEMENT: The mission of IRWP is to improve the integrity of the Illinois River Watershed through public education, community outreach, and implementation of conservation and restoration practices. IRWP OVERVIEW: IRWP is an eighteen-year-old non-profit organization that works to conserve and restore the Illinois River Watershed in Northwest Arkansas and Eastern Oklahoma. The Board of Directors is composed of six stakeholder groups that are tasked with finding consensus-based solutions to fulfill the organization’s mission. The organization currently includes seven staff, over $2M in program funding, and a 30-acre Watershed Sanctuary which serves as an outdoor classroom, office, and event space. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Youth Education and Citizen Science Specialist will implement science-based education programming for primary, middle and high-school students throughout the Illinois River watershed. S/he will expand on existing and develop new ways of engaging youth and adults in water quality and watershed management learning that leads to conservation outcomes and water quality improvements throughout the watershed. This key member of the team will work with school teachers, school administrators, volunteers, and partner organizations to develop, plan and implement programming in both indoor and outdoor settings. Work will be performed under general direction of the IRWP Executive Director. This position will be based in Cave Springs, Arkansas. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Plan and implement field trips and mobile learning labs in coordination with local schools and IRWP team members and/or volunteers. • Develop nature-based learning experiences that align with math and science standards in Arkansas and Oklahoma. • Lead the planning, design, implementation, and analysis of water quality monitoring studies that help advance understanding and opportunities for improving water quality and watershed management. • Lead implementation of a volunteer monitoring program by recruiting volunteer teams and quality assurance in water sampling protocol. • Develop data analysis and visualization for water quality and watershed monitoring. FUNCTIONS OF ALL STAFF: • Promotes IRWP, its mission, and membership (e.g., develop relationships with sponsors, ask businesses and people to become sponsors, speak as an ambassador of IRWP) • Serves as the primary lead for at least one River Clean-up each year • Actively seeks professional development opportunities and works to be the expert in their field • Attends and actively participates in weekly staff meetings • Conducts weekly or bi-weekly meetings with his/her supervisor as needed • Attends Board Meetings • Collaborates with staff and partners to create strong working relationships that advance the mission of the organization
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS • A bachelor’s degree in science and/or education (Master’s degree preferred) with at least three years of directly relevant experience in primary and/or secondary science education and/or other relevant field to the essential functions listed above. • Knowledge of various aspects of watershed resources management, citizen science and/or water quality monitoring. • Familiar with field methods of evaluating water chemistry, habitat assessment, and biological assessment. • Experience with basic computer applications such as Word, Excel, Office and PowerPoint required as well as experience with GIS, R, Tableau or other software a plus. The proposed salary range is $48,000 to $53,000 but will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The following are included in the benefits package: health care insurance reimbursement, 120 hours personal time off, Simple IRA retirement plan with 2% employer contribution after one year, and flexible work schedule.
