The Senior Nutritionist is responsible for providing leadership and a high level of disciplinary knowledge in planning, coordination, and implementation of public education to improve health and wellness among individuals and families and encompassing all age groups throughout long Island in Community Education and issues for the public, in areas of Nutrition, Health, and Wellness. Represents Cornell Cooperative Extension Association before the public, community leaders, government officials, and Cornell University. This position also helps develop and implement social marketing and environmental change initiatives in collaboration with other nutritionists in the Long Island region.
This person is also expected to secure grants and outside funding to support the Program's educational priorities under the direction of the supervisor for the Long Island Region Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP-Ed), Nutrition Education, and Obesity Prevention. The SNAP-Ed program is grant-funded through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Federal Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). Reports and receives supervision and guidance from the Community Education Sr. Issue Leader, Program Advisory Committee, and Board of Directors. May supervise or coordinate the activities of other professionals and clerical staff within the Program.

    

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree required in Nutrition  /Health Education or Public Health or related field.
  • Experience relevant to the role of the position.
  • Advanced knowledge of subject-matter principles, theory, and research in Nutrition
  • Ability to initiate, plan, organize, implement, teach, and evaluate informal adult/youth educational programs for diverse audiences.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using a digital platform and oral, written, and visual channels using traditional tools and methods and electronic technology (e.g., video, audio, computers, etc.).
  • Demonstrated strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to define, conduct, and interpret original and applied research/demonstration projects.
  • Highly developed personal skills to relate effectively with co-workers, advisors, community and professional leaders, targeted audiences, faculty, and researchers.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with diverse individuals and groups of various ages, gender, ethnic backgrounds, educational levels, and learning abilities.
  • Demonstrated practical skills in grant writing and budgeting.
  • Ability to effectively participate in professional team efforts
  • Proven ability to utilize innovative program delivery methods to reach individuals and groups.
  • Demonstrated experience in low-income audiences.
  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Dietetics with current Registration status as RD.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the Cornell Cooperative Extension system is preferred.  Experience in CCE at the Management and program level is preferred.  Experience administering financial, personnel, and other related CCE policies preferred.
  • Familiarity with the community where the work will take place and ability to utilize program resources within the community.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions:


Program Responsibilities:
 

Program Assessment – 15%

  • Assess the Program’s progress and accomplishments of CCE/Suffolk, and if appropriate regional programming for local and state use.
  • Analyze program needs.
  • Make recommendations for programmatic offerings, enhancements, or improvements
  • Identify program needs with the Issue Leader, the program advisory committee, advisory groups, and program participants.

Program Development – 15%

  • Work with local groups on the development of effective programs.
  • Develop and enhance relationships with appropriate community agencies, schools, and community leaders to create innovative educational programming.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team efforts to address priority issues in community Education.
  • Develop strategies and approaches that are DEI inclusive for implementing programs, utilizing a variety of proven educational methodologies
  • Research, identify and select existing resources for the Program.
  • Lead the development of program outreach materials as needed.
  • Develop educational strategies, maintaining direct linkage with Cornell, and other land-grant universities to address diverse audiences

Program Delivery – 25%

  • Work with local and regional municipalities and inter-municipal groups on the implementation of effective stormwater programs
  • Provide educational programming
  • Develop networks of volunteers and professionals to extend program implementation efforts.
  • As identified, serve as an expert subject matter to program committee, staff, and clientele, including schools, agencies, and other groups/associations, on a local, regional, and statewide basis.

Program Evaluation – 10%

  • Utilizing the subject matter to provide leadership in evaluating major programs and recommending changes to emphasize improvement.
  • Communicate evaluation results, findings, and recommendations to educators, program committees, Executive Director, clientele, Cornell faculty, and Extension Administration.
  • Prepare reports on program progress and programming accomplishments for local, state, and federal use.

Applied Research – 5%

  • Collaborate with Cornell faculty to design, create, and implement the applied research collection framework outlined in CCE Program's definition and standard.
  • Maintain direct linkage with Cornell University faculty and program units for guidance in applied research.
  • Communicate social and economic changes to Cornell University Specialists that may be studied performed.
  • Ensure applied research is within the scope of the statewide Plan of Work.
  • May be involved in multidisciplinary and multiple Association team efforts to design or analyze program evaluation.

Administrative Responsibilities:

Direction – 10%

  • Seek out proposals to secure additional funding, actively involving the Executive Director, Issue Leader, program committee, Board of Directors, Cornell faculty, Extension Administration
  • Provide leadership to the staffing plan and development process, including planning new positions as needed.
  • Establish goals, priorities, and objectives for programs.
  • May provide highly complex administrative tasks to the total regional program effort to plan and implement educational programs, social media activities, and environmental change initiatives.
  • Provide leadership in planning public awareness initiatives in the form of impact statements, articles for progress/annual reports, or news releases.
  • Provide leadership in the planning the delivery of established educational program goals
  • Assist in developing or enhancing relationships with appropriate agencies, organizations, and community leaders for the Program.
  • Assist in the design of a system of ongoing involvement of citizens, which expresses the community's demographics.

Management – 10%

  • Supervise Educators in the teams as needed
  • Monitor program to ensure that educational content conforms to the Association's policies and objectives and is research knowledge-based.
  • Ensure achievement of all project deliverables within budget.
  • Provide counsel and support to extension educators within CCE/Suffolk and other associations to foster organizational confidence and competence in program processes and impact

Coordination/Operation – 5%

  • May coordinate the activities of professional staff as a multi-county team leader
  • Prepare, and submit proposals to secure additional funding, actively involving the Executive Director, Issue Leader, program committee, Board of Directors, Cornell faculty, and Extension Administration.
  • Compile data and written reports and work plans.
  • Submit proposals for grants and contracts that will fund new and existing program activities.
  • Attend meetings, Association special events, and participate in staff development opportunities, as requested.
  • Support association(s), statewide, and federal extension system marketing efforts.
  • Effectively maintain professional relationships with other agencies, Cornell faculty, students, organizations, and businesses that promote effective communication and facilitate continued programming efforts.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor or Executive Director, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.
  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.
  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

Salary:                                     $60,000.00 - $62,000.00 annually
