The University Writing Center is seeking a Writing Consultant I who will be responsible for consulting face-to-face or online with students in the Writing Center about writing and public speaking; maintaining records of consultations; presenting at events and workshops; attending training and staff meetings; and assisting with reception as needed. The Writing Consultant I will serve as a team leader; will assist with training consultants; and will develop materials used in teaching, consulting, or marketing. In addition, the Writing Consultant I will serve as a night and weekend supervisor as needed and will cross train and communicate with other staff members to maintain business continuity and promote a team environment. Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and verbal and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of writing basics
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • This position will require some night or weekend supervisory duty as needed.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Academic specialization in rhetoric (written or verbal), written composition, or ESL/EFL
  • Experience as a writer, editor (digital text included), teacher of writing or public speaking, or tutor/administrator in a writing, speaking, or learning center
  • Experience tutoring or teaching writing and/or speaking in a higher education setting
  • Experience with new media such as audio or video production and editing
  • Experience as a supervisor and/or program administrator

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
  • Basic knowledge of new media such as audio or video production and editing
  • Skilled in Adobe Creative Suite, web design or html, content management systems, spreadsheets. Knowledge of rhetoric, composition, communication, or writing studies
  • Strong research, writing, and reporting skills
  • Ability to analyze complex situations, to generate ideas for effective solutions, to prioritize tasks, and to implement effective courses of action
  • Knowledge of Canvas or higher education learning management system

Preferred Licenses and Certifications:

  • College Reading and Learning Association or other tutoring certification

Responsibilities

  • Administration - Coordinates the Dissertation, Article, and Thesis Assistance program to include training consultants, assigning and communicating with applicants, and maintaining program records. Coordinates student programming such as DATA or Write Line.  Assists with scheduling and rearranging appointments as needed. Assists with organizing programs such as writing retreats and Final Paper Countdown. Assists in the hiring process for new consultants. Assists in coordinating staff, team and team leader meetings. Attends trainings and staff meetings. Attends other presentations and conferences on campus. Represents the writing center at conferences and university events.
  • Tutoring - Tutors/consults students on their writing, speaking and audio/video skills. Maintains records of consultations. Fills in for other consultants on the schedule when necessary. Mentors graduate students through the DATA program. Develops tutoring/consulting material. Conducts classroom workshops and tailors material for specific audiences when needed.
  • Supervision - Serves as a Team Leader for peer tutors, which includes conducting student worker annual performance evaluations, writing quarterly performance records, and reviewing leave requests. Provides feedback to writing center consultants regarding their tutoring performance and other job duties. Maintains a productive work environment in the writing consultant area. Serves as evening supervisor as needed.
  • Instruction - Assists in training new student consultants and provides ongoing training and professional development for current consultants. Presents at staff training sessions and team meetings as needed. Assists in teaching tutor training classes. Performs other duties as assigned.
