Job Title: Writing 316, 2-credit equivalent component of Civil Engineering (CE) 471: Civil Engineering Writing

Job Classification: Adjunct Faculty - Teaching. This posting may result in 1 or more adjunct faculty hires who will be eligible to teach the following section types: Day and/or Evening.

Required Degree: MA in English, MFA in Creative Writing, or master's degree in comparable field. 

The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience: College-level composition course instruction preferred 

Duties/Expectations: Teach Writing 316, 2-credit equivalent component of CE 471: Civil Engineering Writing

Writing Course Instruction: Teach the following General Education writing 2-credit equivalent for the CE 471: Civil Engineering Writing class:

WRTG 316: Technical Communication - Effective processes of written, oral, and visual technical communication, including collaborative processes. Writing for academic and professional audiences.

The writing component of the course has required learning outcomes and recommended assignments as set by the University Writing program.

Instructor Availability: Applicants must be available to teach in-person classes on the BYU Provo campus. Instructors are expected to hold at least three office hours each week, share an office with up to two additional adjunct faculty, and must be responsive to student inquiries in a timely manner. Office hours may be held in person and/or online. Instructors are required to reside in the state of Utah.

Training and Meetings: Adjunct faculty may be required to attend training prior to the start of teaching assignment, depending on prior teaching experience and familiarity with BYU's writing program. Training for new courses is available annually. Additional employee training may be offered periodically (EEO, accessibility, LMS, etc.). Adjunct faculty do not attend regular faculty meetings and are not required to participate in research or citizenship responsibilities.

Performance Reviews: Adjunct faculty receive performance reviews annually, which may include the following: review of student ratings and course materials, teaching observations, and a self-assessment. In addition, course coordinators and/or undergraduate committee members may review course materials and recommend changes to align with department standards. Syllabi and student work may be used for program assessment purposes.

Teaching Load and Future Employment Opportunities: In the BYU Civil and Construction Engineering Department, adjunct faculty may teach up to 10.5 credits/semester, depending on other BYU concurrent employment as well as department need. Adjunct writing faculty are hired on a semester-to-semester basis. If an adjunct faculty member has a teaching gap of 11 or more consecutive months within the Civil and Construction Engineering Department, they must formally reapply and receive clearance to be eligible for future teaching contracts.
