Position Summary Information


General Information
The School of Art, Design, and Art History at James Madison University seeks a collaborative and engaging full-time Woodshop Supervisor. The Woodshop Supervisor will provide technical support and assistance for all curricular school programs, especially Foundations and Studio Art. The position involves supervising and managing the woodshop facility, use, and equipment. This position provides students with safety, essential equipment, and tool training and manages and trains student monitors. This position will work closely with the Duke Hall Studio Technician and Risk Management to enforce SADAH and JMU safety protocols. The Woodshop Supervisor serves as a co-building coordinator for Duke Hall. The Woodshop Supervisor will report directly to the school director and work closely with faculty and staff to enhance the teaching and learning experience of the community through communication and collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage the operation, budget, and schedules for the Duke Hall Woodshop
  • Manage Woodshop supplies and materials
  • Assist students and faculty with projects, techniques, and safe use of equipment
  • Serve as a co-Building Coordinator for Duke Hall to oversee operations of the facility and follow up with Facilities Management and the School Director when building issues arise
  • Coordinate with Duke Hall Studio Technician and Risk Management regarding Duke Hall safety issues / concerns
  • Train and supervise student workers and shop assistants
  • Provide safety training for students and faculty
  • Reinforce high standards for craftsmanship, thoroughness, and efficiency
  • Complete regular documented safety inspections
  • Stay up-to-date with technology, software, materials, and processes
  • Additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned by the School Director
  • Maintain, manage, and repair Woodshop equipment
  • Serve on School and College committees as requested
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated ability to operate mechanical tools and equipment in Woodshop
  • Demonstrated ability to provide woodworking and technology skills
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, evaluate, and perform maintenance on Woodshop machines and work with Facility Management as needed to address facility issues
  • Demonstrated ability to provide safety practices and processes for working in the Woodshop
  • Interpersonal skills to communicate with faculty, staff, and students
  • Organizational skills

Additional Considerations:
  • Previous completion of OSHA training, or ability to complete OSHA 30-hour training course upon entering the role no later than one year after hire date
  • Previous managing experience in industry and/or higher education in a related field
  • Artistic and Design professional practice

The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, the university police law enforcement authority, crime reporting policies, disciplinary procedures, protocols for the immediate notification of students and staff upon confirmation of a significant emergency on campus and other matters of importance related to security and safety. The report includes statistics for the most recent three-year period of reported crimes that have occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by JMU or its affiliates; and on public property within or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report includes campus housing fire statistics for the most recent three-year period, a description of each on-campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, policies or rules on portable electrical appliances, smoking, and open flames in student housing; and procedures for student housing evacuation in the event of fire along with other fire safety information.
