Description
This is a great opportunity to beef up your resume with lots training certificates, and experience, network with a variety of agencies, learn about the ecosystems of the Southeast, rare species ecology, prescribed fire, and habitat management. The successful applicant will work with a number of different biologists from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, The Nature Conservancy, US Forest Service, Georgia State Parks and other agencies, as well as volunteers to restore wildlife habitat primarily in West-central Georgia. Most work is focused on sandhill and montane longleaf pine ecosystem but may also include work in hardwood forests and grasslands. Leadership opportunities will be available on the fireline, as well as serving as a crew leader on assigned projects. JOB DUTIES: • Prescribed fire – performing controlled burns as part of a team including walking miles in rugged terrain, installing firebreaks using leaf blowers, tractors, skid steer loader. Passing the arduous pack test within two weeks is required as a condition of employment. • Herbicide work – applied using ATV, UTV, Tractor, backpack sprayers. • Timber marking – walking miles in rough/brushy/buggy terrain prepping timber sales. • Chainsaw work – removing brush, fallen trees from roads and around nest structures. • Mowing – Maintaining grounds, lawns, roadside mowing. Using tractors and implements to mow and plow firebreaks and roadsides. • Maintenance and repair – of vehicles, ATVs, tractors, buildings. May include plumbing, minor electrical work and small construction jobs. TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED UPON HIRE: • NWCG Wildland Fire Fighter Type 2 Training (S130, S190, L100) • ATV Safety training (ATV Safety Institute) • NWCG Chainsaw (2-S12) training • Herbicide handling and safety
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: -Successful applicants must pass the arduous pack test within 2 weeks of hire as a condition of employment -Applicants are requested to submit a copy of their Covid-19 vaccination card, if they have one, as part of their application PREFERRED SKILLS: -Familiarity and experience with operating heavy equipment such as skid steer and farm tractors, spray equipment, welder -Experience loading and towing trailers -Experience with prescribed fire -Knowledge of native and exotic plant species, longleaf ecosystem ecology
