Description
Summary/Objective This position is responsible for strategic leadership for the wildlife ambassador program and living exhibits at Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory (SNCO). The specialist also provides leadership for education and visitor experience programs by developing conservation-based educational programs with SNCO’s animal ambassadors. Position Responsibilities · Ensure proper daily care and enrichment of a diverse collection of animals including raptors, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. · Develop and review protocols and SOPs for management and maintenance of the animal collection, exhibits, and associated facilities. · Provide knowledge, leadership, and skills in creating, implementing, and assessing behavior goals and training plans for wildlife. · Train staff members and volunteers on daily husbandry procedures and handling and training protocols to ensure handler and animal safety and compliance with approved training and enrichment plans. · Maintain adequate inventories of all animal food, supplies, and equipment. · Ensure compliance with all federal/state government regulations as they apply to the care and welfare of SNCO’s animal collection and wildlife. Assist with permit reporting and renewals. · Lead SNCO’s wildlife support services including responding to and advising local residents and visitors on sick and injured wildlife; permitted intake, transfer, and care of wildlife. · Training volunteers and staff on best practices in caring for wildlife and working closely with local veterinarians and wildlife rehabbers. · Assist with the ongoing development and implementation of an animal collection plan. · Contribute to the development and implementation of SNCO’s wildlife conservation initiatives. · Develop and deliver natural history presentations to various audiences and age groups both on and offsite. · Contribute to the development and execution of informational/interpretive displays, signage, and living and static exhibits. · Participate in the development and execution of organization-wide special events including the annual Wildflower Show, Fungi Fest, and others. · Assist with front-line operations by greeting and checking in visitors, providing roving interpretation on campus, and responding to visitor inquiries by phone, email, and in person. · Enforce Sunriver Nature Center & Observatory’s visitor rules and regulations and provide exceptional guest service to the general public. · Contribute to marketing and communication initiatives by providing content for social media, newsletters, articles, etc. · Train and supervise employees and volunteers in animal care roles. · Other duties as assigned. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee works indoors and outdoors, which may include extreme temperatures, with a diverse population and wildlife. Qualifications
Required Education and Experience · Bachelor’s degree or higher in biology, wildlife sciences, environmental sciences, or related degree. · A minimum of three years of professional experience with raptor husbandry, handling, and presentation of public programs using raptors. · Experience in raptor training using operant conditioning techniques. · Previous experience with herpetofauna or invertebrates in captivity, is valued. · Strong grounding in the natural sciences including local flora and fauna. · Excellent communication skills; written, verbal, and listening. · Ability to adapt and be flexible with quickly changing environments. · Strong organizational skills and an ability to multitask. · Conscientious and detail-oriented; must be able to follow through with record-keeping. · Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to build relationships with constituents and partners based on integrity and trust. · Strong spirit of cooperation and teamwork with strong interpersonal skills. · Must have a valid Oregon driver’s license. · Tetanus vaccine Preferred Education and Experience · Previous experience with raptors preferred.
