Description
Harris County Precinct 4 has an exciting opportunity for a Wildlife Care Specialist. The Wildlife Care Specialist will be an integral member of the Parks Department team and responsible for providing daily care to the resident animal ambassadors at the Wildlife Sanctuary in Bear Creek Pioneers Park. Applicant must follow supervisor’s instructions, understand sanctuary rules, and have a genuine sense of care and respect towards all animals. The ideal candidate would have a “can do” attitude, be detail oriented, animal science knowledgeable, be thorough in all tasks and most importantly have an ongoing calmness and patience when interacting with the animals. Personal conduct must always be courteous and professional when interacting with the public, including the interpretation of approved policies. Duties and Responsibilities: -Feeding all animal species (avian, hooved & reptiles). -Cleaning indoor and outdoor animal enclosures. -Daily practices of animal enrichment, grooming and other care as required. -Schedule veterinary care appointments & transport in work vehicle and/or livestock trailer, as applicable. -Complete & maintain animal care log on a regular basis. This includes and is not limited to animal care provided, behaviors witnessed, veterinary needs, history, and other relevant information as applicable. -Administer medications and offer first response care to species in need. -Complete weekly groceries to purchase fresh fruits & vegetables for wildlife. -Monitor inventory supplies and request needs for purchase from supervisor. -Maintain a clean and sanitized workspace; including and not limited to barn, medical pens, aviaries, equipment, and park grounds. -Identify maintenance needs and complete “work order” requests. -Assist service providers (i.e., farrier and veterinarians) as requested. -Must have experience or be willing to learn the operation of driving a livestock trailer. -Clean grounds and provide litter control of trash, leaves, and pine needles. -Operate blowers and pressure washing equipment to remove dirt and debris from sidewalks and structures. -Assist, on occasion, the skilled trades staff with maintenance and construction projects such as installing A/C - heating systems, plumbing, lighting, irrigation, etc. -Complete additional tasks required to maintain the proper health of sanctuary animals and maintain a fully operational facility and service to the community. -Other responsibilities may be assigned as required.
Qualifications
Experience: -Two (2) years of post-secondary education science/wildlife care OR -Four (4) years of experience offering direct care & handling of equine, swine, caprine, avian and/or swine species. Licensure: -Texas driver’s license and a good driving record. NOTE: Qualifying education, experience, knowledge, and skills must be documented on your job application.
