- COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is for students and professionals interested in learning about all aspects of capturing and immobilizing wild animals using a variety of techniques and drugs. Learn from Dr. Terry Kreeger, the author of the Handbook of Wildlife Chemical Immobilization, which is the seminal work on the topic; an important resource for wildlife professionals around the world (go ahead, check their bookshelves!); and the textbook used to design other similar courses taught around the world. This course is also the prerequisite for a 4-day FIELD COURSE designed to provide students a one-of-a-kind, hands-on learning experience capturing elk, black bears, wolves, mountain lions, and several species of mesocarnivores at the Wildlife Science Center (WSC) in Stacy, MN. TOPICS: Introduction and Capture Philosophy Legalities, Extra-Label Use, & Withdrawal Times Controlled Substances & Labeling Drug Definitions and Characteristics Calculating Drug Doses & Drug Combinations Neuromuscular Blocking Drugs Tranquilizers, Sedatives, Cyclohexanes, & Opioids Other Anesthetics, Enantiomers, and the Future of Capture Drugs Overview of Recommended Drugs Drug Delivery Methods: Introduction, Projectors, Darts Animal Capture Considerations Approach and Immobilization Handling an Immobilized Animal Urban Animal Capture Analgesia and Euthanasia Animal Emergency Medicine Human Emergency Medicine Responses to Specific Drugs FORMAT: - 1-credit equivalent academic course (16 contact hrs + additional work). - Learn at your own pace by watching prerecorded lectures, working on problem sets, reading peer-reviewed journal articles and text from Dr. Kreeger’s handbook, and taking self-assessments. - Contact Dr. Kreeger to discuss course materials or your personal project for one year. - A multiple choice exam will be administered to those seeking a certificate of course completion. - Earn academic credit at your home institution by taking an additional assessment to test your knowledge. - PREREQUISITES: None. Students that took an approved course (e.g., Safe Capture) 1-3 years ago are eligible to take a CWS refresher anytime.
