- COURSE DESCRIPTION: This immersive 4-day field course is designed to provide students a one-of-a-kind, hands-on learning experience capturing and chemically immobilizing wildlife. Prior to arriving at the Wildlife Science Center (WSC), students will attend an online course to prepare them for their visit. Online lectures will be delivered by Terry Kreeger, author of the Handbook of Wildlife Chemical Immobilization, which is internationally recognized as THE text book and field guide to wildlife chemical immobilization. At WSC, participants will participate in a series of interactive labs with some of the most prominent wildlife professionals in the United States. Our ALL-STAR instructors will teach participants about all practical aspects of capture and chemical immobilization, including safe capture techniques, pharmacology, delivery systems, patient monitoring, medical emergencies, and more. Several species will be used as ambassadors for learning, including cougars, black bears, wolves, and elk. YES, you will handle these animals! ACTIVITIES: -Select the appropriate drugs and calculate the correct dosages for each species -Learn safety protocols associated with darting and drug handling, capture, and chemical immobilization -Become proficient in using a variety of projectors during a dart gun lab -Demonstrate proper patient care and monitoring -Learn how to draw blood and collect other tissue samples for disease monitoring and research -Understand how to properly mark animals using a variety of tags, including radio-collars -Administer vaccinations and antibiotics to immobilized animals -Evening lectures by instructors and local agency biologists FORMAT: Each day, students will capture, chemically immobilize, and handle different species of wildlife at WSC. FIELD SCHEDULE (subject to change) : Day 1 - Dart gun lab & cougar captures and chemical immobilization Day 2 - Black bear captures and chemical immobilization Day 3 - Wolf captures and chemical immobilization Day 4 - Mesocarnivore captures and chemical immobilization INSTRUCTORS: Peggy Callahan, Dr. Terry Kreeger, & Dr. Dave Garshelis DATES: March 6-9, 2023 LOCATION: Wildlife Science Center, Stacy, MN LODGING: Shared bunkhouse accommodations available onsite for students at a fee of $35/night. - Qualifications
- PREREQUISITES: Wildlife Capture and Chemical Immobilization (ONLINE) or proof of training from an approved course provider (e.g., Safe Capture) are eligible to enroll in CWS's field course if the course was completed <1 year ago. Students that took an approved course 1-3 years ago are eligible to take a CWS refresher anytime. Students that have not taken the training in >3 years MUST take CWS's regular online course before attending the field course.
