Description of Work Unit
CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. Position Summary
A Wildlife Biologist position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands. This position is located at Pohakuloa Training Area on the Big Island in Hawaii.
The biologist implements management actions to meet the objectives of the Wildlife program. The biologist supports daily field tasks as assigned and implements protocols to manage native Hawaiian animal species, including endangered birds, bats and insects, manage wildlife habitats, and control small mammalian predators and other threats to sensitive wildlife species. The biologist is responsible for monitoring project success and associated data collection, data management and reporting. The biologist assists with annual monitoring of birds by sight and sound. The biologist may be required to handle native fauna and pest species as part of management. The biologist works with a suite of electronic surveillance equipment to monitor targeted wildlife species. The biologist is supervised by the Wildlife Program Manager and primarily works with other field staff, but also works alone. The position averages up to approximately 75% of time in the field.
Work location is dependent on the needs of the partner/project/role. In some instances, positions may require staff to be fully in-person. In other instances, hybrid or remote arrangements may be possible.
Required Job Qualifications
  • BS/BA degree in biology, zoology, wildlife management, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years professional experience in applied wildlife biology
  • Basic proficiency and experience with research techniques, including data management, basic statistical analysis, and report writing,
  • Experience with wildlife field data collection, including Global Positioning System (GPS) and field navigation.
  • Experience managing native wildlife species including implementing surveys and/or monitoring methodologies and data collection.
  • Demonstrated ability to hike for 6-8 hours and up to 10 kilometers per day while carrying field pack over rough terrain, in inclement weather.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in wildlife management, zoology, conservation biology, or closely-related field.
  • Experience with bird identification by sight and sound, especially species found in Hawaii.
  • Experience with acoustic monitoring techniques for bats and/or birds, including operating automated acoustic recording units and analyzing acoustic data using software.
  • Experience with research or management of threatened or endangered wildlife, especially select Hawaiian seabirds, Hawaiian Goose (nene), and Hawaiian hoary bat.
  • Experience implementing nuisance animal control using several methods and a variety of equipment including live-capture traps and lethal traps.
  • Experience with managing or restoring habitat including application of herbicides or pesticides to control nonnative invasive plants and invertebrates.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) including data entry and management, analysis, digital data collection applications (e.g., Collector App), and map creation.
  • Proficient with Windows-based computers and MS Office Suite software Including Excel, Access, Word.
  • Related work experience on a military installation.
  • Experience driving 4wd vehicles.
