The Earth Section of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography encompasses research in the Cecil H. & Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) and the Geosciences Research Division (GRD). Research in IGPP spans a broad range of topics in geophysics including seismology, geodynamics, geodesy and crustal deformation, geomorphology, planetary physics, geomagnetism and paleomagnetism, oceanography and electrical methods.

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) has a national reputation as a pioneer and leader in high-performance and data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure. Located on the campus of UC San Diego, SDSC provides resources, services and expertise to the national research community including industry and academia.

The High Performance Wireless Research and Education Network (HPWREN), a University of California San Diego partnership project led by the San Diego Supercomputer Center and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, supports Internet-data applications in the research, education, and public safety realms.

HPWREN functions as a collaborative, Internet-connected cyberinfrastructure. The project supports a high-bandwidth wireless backbone and access data network in San Diego, Riverside, and Imperial counties in areas that are typically not well-served by other technologies to reach the Internet. This includes backbone locations, typically sited on mountain tops, to connect often hard-to-reach areas in the remote Southern California back country.

Under direction of the senior network architect, this position is responsible for managing the overall network cyberinfrastructure that supports the research and public safety end-users of the HPWREN network. This includes overseeing management of the network segments and firewalls in use on each mountain-top hub site, as well as directly managing the network space in the data centers that host the servers for the network. As needed, the Wide-area Wireless Network Administrator assists with other HPWREN-led wireless projects. The position performs in-depth analyses and implements solutions for highly complex issues in a number of technical areas:

  • Administration of network management platforms such as Netbox;

  • Management of enterprise network switches and routers from vendors such as Cisco and Mikrotik;

  • Management of enterprise firewall devices from vendors such as Fortinet;

  • Management of server and network log aggregation and analysis platforms such as Splunk;

  • Management of terrestrial microwave radio systems from vendors such as SIAE, Ubiquiti, Radwin

  • Implementation of secure configurations to minimize trust relationships between network segments.

The responsibilities of this position are focused on HPWREN backbone and edge network infrastructure management, but expertise and occasional assistance with server infrastructure issues is required.

In collaboration with San Diego County Fire Authority IT and UCSD ITS staff, the position implements architecture reference designs of a shared cyberinfrastructure platform across the network backbone. The Wide-area Wireless Network Administrator also meets with colleagues from other network operators in to design and deploy infrastructure services that support common needs from different institutions.

The Wide-area Wireless Network Administrator primarily works from La Jolla, but will occasionally need to work irregular hours to resolve critical operations issues or assist with deployment of equipment at tower and customer sites.

  • Demonstrated ability to install network infrastructure hardware, replace parts, diagnose faults, and work with sales and service personnel.

  • Experience with vendor relations and the evaluation, selection, and purchasing of hardware and software. Experience with Cisco and Arista switches.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of IP-based networking (TCP, UDP, ICMP). Knowledge of switch, router and firewall management using CIDR and VLAN configurations. Expertise with layer-2 and layer-3 VPN tunneling at the host and network levels.

  • Advanced knowledge of network troubleshooting tools such as ping and traceroute, and network activity monitoring tools such as Intermapper and Wireshark.

  • General knowledge of other areas of IT. Thorough understanding of and experience with systems-related issues and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Familiarity with high-volume data logging, aggregation and reporting tools such as Splunk.

  • Advanced knowledge of computer security best practices and policies including demonstrated experience securing server-based software. Extensive knowledge of common intrusion detection and prevention tools at the network and host layers.

  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing complex scripts used to perform system maintenance and administration. Advanced programming and/or scripting skills in Python, Linux shell scripting, and configuration management platforms such as Ansible, Nornir, or Puppet.

  • Experience with VMware and other virtualization hypervisors. This includes provisioning, performance tuning, and recovery. Experience with SAN/NAS technology, and HA configurations such as clustering, teaming, and load balancing.

  • Ability to elicit and communicate technical and non-technical information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Knowledge of network traffic analysis tools. Knowledge of common intrusion detection and prevention tools at the network and host layers.
