Wellness Advisor

Updated: over 1 year ago
Location: Bethesda, MARYLAND
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) has an immediate need for part-time wellness advisors (at least 8 hours weekly) to work with NIH trainees including summer interns, postbacs, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

The OITE (

www.training.nih.gov

) supports trainees working on all NIH campuses, with remote and in person programming to promote their personal and professional growth. Our community of ~4000 trainees, from across the US and the world, is highly talented and motivated. To help our trainees succeed we offer workshops (currently on-line) to support trainee learning in a variety of topics, including communication, US acculturation for international fellows, wellness and resilience, career decision making, the educational application process, leadership and management, etc.

OITE Wellness Advisors provide guidance to the OITE director, OITE staff, and the broader NIH community on issues regarding trainee health and well-being, with an emphasis on success within complex research and educational environments. This includes providing subject matter expertise on challenges that impact trainee success in research environments including, but not limited to, issues relating to stress management, resilience, diversity and inclusion, stereotype threat, imposter fears and cross-cultural mentoring. We seek diverse candidates with enthusiasm for working with young adults and STEM professionals.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing and delivering wellness/resiliency workshops, facilitating small group discussions, leading guided mediations and/or journaling sessions, writing blog posts, developing educational materials, and meeting individually with trainees and staff to discuss wellness issues. Incumbents will also be involved in the coordination of services for trainees dealing with acute stressors, including workplace conflict, family issues, emerging identities, and health concerns. The incumbents will report directly to the Director of the OITE and work collaboratively with OITE staff, campus constituents, and off-campus colleagues and partners. This is a unique opportunity for individuals with a background in student services, counseling, or human resource management who enjoy teaching, mentoring and working individually with students and emerging professionals. We are currently working remotely with an anticipated return to the main campus in Bethesda MD, but OITE wellness advisors may travel to other NIH campuses in Baltimore, Frederick, Shady Grove, etc.

Qualifications:
  • Master’s Degree or doctoral degree in a related field; such as psychology, social work, counseling, etc.
  • Minimum of four years of relevant experience in student services, health, wellness, or resilience counseling or advising.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Previous experience working with students (high school or beyond), providing counseling, student health and/or social work contexts.
  • Well-developed understanding and demonstrated experience working with mental health crisis intervention, developmental processes and confidentiality.
  • Significant experience working with historically marginalized students and/or professionals and have the ability and keen desire to work collaboratively with a diverse population of trainees and staff.

To Apply:

To apply, please submit a resume, a cover letter explaining your interest in the position, and a writing sample in a single electronic file to Dr. Sharon Milgram (

) in the OITE. The writing sample should be in the form of a blog post focused on a topic relevant to wellness or resilience.
