Accountabilities
The Weekend Circulation Assistant plays a crucial role in maintaining the high quality of library services at Colgate University, especially in the absence of the Supervisor. This position entails:
Circulation and Customer Service: Providing excellent circulation services at service desks, including issuing, returning, and managing library materials. The assistant ensures adherence to all library policies related to building and collection use, prioritizing fair and empathetic service.
Building and Security Oversight: Monitoring the usage and security of the Case-Geyer building across all floors. This includes closing procedures, emergency response, and controlling building access. The assistant must be knowledgeable about the library’s security systems and emergency protocols.
Policy Enforcement and Problem Solving: Enforcing library policies, interpreting rules for patrons, and resolving issues with the help of the Late-Night Supervisor or other designated authorities when necessary.
Training and Supervision: Training and overseeing student workers at the Circulation Desk, ensuring they are well-prepared to meet patrons’ needs.
Equipment and Room Management: Assisting library users with library equipment, managing room reservations, and ensuring the smooth operation of library spaces. This includes troubleshooting equipment issues and overseeing rooms scheduled through EMS.
Administrative Duties: Creating and updating patron records, handling fees, and utilizing various software applications to maintain efficient library operations. The assistant also engages in professional development to stay updated on relevant systems and procedures.
Additional Responsibilities: Performing other duties as needed, including supporting the LASR retrieval system and participating in library events or projects.
This role requires a commitment to excellent customer service, a deep understanding of library policies, and the ability to manage library operations effectively, especially during weekends.

Requirements


Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Experience with Windows-based computer software, willingness and ability to learn new, special purpose software applications.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to function within a culturally diverse community and workforce.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Experience with Operations Management.
  • Experience working with young adults.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Library experience preferred
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Public service experience preferred
Education
Associates degree required, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are acquired.
Physical Requirements
Must be capable of standing for extended periods as well as perform tasks requiring bending, reaching and lifting up to 40 pounds.
