Job Summary
University Relations and Marketing is seeking a Web Specialist. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
University Marketing strives to increase Oregon State’s name recognition and appreciation through varied platforms, channels and strategies that support the overall strategic plan of the university.
It is the responsibility of each University Marketing staff member to deliver an accurate, authentic, highly engaging and inclusive message to university audiences. All members of the University Marketing department work to enhance the Oregon State brand and deliver on our promise as the state’s land grant university through integrated and aligned marketing and communication strategies.
It is expected that this position will add to a culture of continued learning, collaboration and respect, including active engagement in learning and practicing principles of social justice and inclusion.
The web specialist position is part of a digital marketing team whose main goal is to advance the brand of Oregon State University and inform the public about the university in the digital space. This position is part of a team that includes writers, editors, visual artists, project managers, social media specialists, content creators and strategic leaders. This position is responsible for website design, development and the maintenance of the OSU homepage, top tier pages, leadership pages and other university sites. The web specialist works closely with division leadership on digital formats to deliver priority university communications. Through the work on leadership websites, this position is made aware of sensitive and confidential information before it is made available to the public.

Key Responsibilities
40% DIGITAL CHANNEL DEVELOPMENT
  • Provides leadership across the university in web design, development and maintenance, research and implementation of new technologies to meet the goals and priorities of the university and internal clients/partners. This position is part of a university-wide web community that provides ongoing Drupal training sessions, collaborates on projects and persuades, gains cooperation and acceptance of ideas on significant projects.
  • Designs, builds and updates websites and pages for the homepage as well as departments and divisions across the university. Manages and executes web development projects, including planning, designing, identifying, and managing resources, timelines, alternatives, impacts of changes and issues involving technical and resource/budgetary constraints. Ensures all website projects adhere to university standards and best practices for accessibility.
  • Manages relationships and collaborates with internal partners, freelancers and agencies to ensure successful implementation of system changes and promotes university tools and services.
  • Manages relationships with URM leaders and OSU clients to determine high-level goals and strategies and executes on those goals and strategies to achieve the project outcomes.

35% OSU WEBSITE MANAGEMENT
  • Develops strategies and implements tactical plans for technology solutions that address current and future needs of the university’s homepage, top tier pages, leadership sites and other university sites. Ensures these channels reflect the university’s strategic priorities and brand identity.
  • Works within OSU’s content management system (Drupal) to design and build websites, custom themes, researches and recommends modules and plug-ins. Establishes and executes best practices for user experience, information architecture, accessibility and front-end development.
  • Establishes protocols, identifies web priorities, responds to request, develops and maintains a schedule for website content updates and design changes. Communicates with staff, university leadership and university communicators for proposed enhancements and changes to ensure successful delivery of updates.
  • Anticipates program needs and deadlines for changes; prepares and presents recommendations for adaptation, customization or alternatives to resolve issues. Stays up to date on trends, standards and best practices.
  • Manages relationships and collaborates with internal and external stakeholder to ensure successful implementation of system changes and promotes support services.
  • Monitors, tracks and reports on division digital activity to department and division leadership.
  • Configures and manages university-wide Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager that run on all university websites.
  • Tracks and analyzes OSU’s Google Analytics and other key metrics. Uses data to inform strategy.
  • Contributes to effective organic search engine optimization. Edits pages, content, metadata and other strategies to maximize rankings. Maintains a current understanding of SEO best practices.
  • Works with sensitive and/or confidential information and facilitates collaboration at the highest level.

15% DEI AND SOCIAL JUSTING MARKETING, COMMUNICATIONS AND BRAND MANAGEMENT
  • Works closely with the URM leadership to express the university’s brand in digital spaces.
  • Reviews websites for adherence to the university’s brand guidelines and provides guidance to units on the execution of those policies.
  • This position is a leader in the university’s digital community on best practices and tools to improve and attain the goals and standards, set by the URM division, of marketing and communications through the DEI perspective. This work includes collaborating with designers, writers and other digital team members to keep this priority moving forward.

5% CONTINUAL EDUCATION/RESEARCH
  • Due to the ever-changing nature of the web and digital marketing industry, this position is expected to stay up to date with current trends, techniques, and practices. This includes training, self-driven research and continued professional development.

5% OSU CRISIS MANAGEMENT TEAM
  • Works at the direction of URM leadership to provide support in communicating information to internal and external stakeholders during crisis situations. This includes posting OSU alerts on the homepage, building web pages to provide more details to stakeholders and assisting in finding other digital solutions during this time.
What You Will Need
  • A Bachelor’s degree in web design, marketing, communication or other relevant degree and 3 years professional experience in web design, UX, front-end development/design, or related work.
  • Experience with modern front-end web technologies including HTML5, CSS3 and jQuery.
  • Demonstrated expert proficiency with large-scale content management systems, such as Drupal.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity in a professional or personal setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of information architecture and website design best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully independently.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The work of this position is primarily located in Corvallis, Ore. This position is eligible for a remote/hybrid working arrangement, conditions to be approved by the supervisor. Some work may be done remotely at the discretion of the supervisor. Occasional evening, early morning and weekend work is required when adjustments are needed for websites that are critical to university communications or strategies. For example: post emergency alert messages on the homepage.
