The web development team is a critical part of University Communications and Marketing as it works with many campus groups to provide effective web communications tools and solutions. The team is responsible for creating and maintaining web products and tools used by campus partners. It also devises solutions to custom client needs. This includes custom add-ons for a specific client, implementing third-party tools to meet communications and marketing needs, assist with data analytics collection, monitoring, and reporting, and providing effective documentation, training, and support for campus partners. The web development team works closely with other UComm teams such as design, writing, and project management/client services.
Essential Job Duties
The web specialist position is part of the web development team within University Communications and Marketing. This position will specifically work with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs (DASA) to assist with help requests, website redesigns/migrations, and other web needs of the division. The specialist will assist with team projects and help execute internal website and digital communications projects.
WordPress experience is highly preferred, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment on multiple simultaneous projects is crucial.
Duties include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct website inventory audits and help guide campus partners to stay on track with their content migrations
  • Have familiarity with WordPress and how to edit menus, create pages/posts, activate plugins, and manage users
  • Assisting with performing technical updates using Manage WP, WP CLI, and FTP
  • Liaison between DASA Strategic Marketing and Communications team and UCOMM web team on projects and ongoing web communication needs
  • Ability to work with a variety of constituents to plan, implement and problem solve web layout and user flow questions for the best UX
  • Assist with acting as front-line support for partner questions on web projects
  • Conduct QA testing and website audits
  • Do minor copywriting for calls to action, headings, and other page elements to facilitate content layout best practices
  • Provide training and act as a resource for department web editors and publishers
  • Manage website and project requests, track progress, and communicate progress to stakeholders
  • Help partners understand basic SEO tactics to be employed on their website
  • Install and use Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, and other analytics tools to track and report on website performance
  • Contribute to digital marketing strategy discussions/decisions
  • Contribute to content discussions and optimization
  • Contribute to digital outreach communications strategy including email and other marketing automation efforts

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Associate’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the area of assignment; or bachelor’s degree and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the area of assignment; or bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • HTML/CSS Proficiency: Fundamental understanding of HTML5 and CSS3 to build and style webpages.
  • Responsive Design: Ability to create designs that work on desktops, tablets, and mobiles.
  • Information Architecture: Experience assisting with content audits and providing guidance on creating a sitemap.
  • CMS Familiarity: Experience with Content Management Systems like WordPress.
  • SEO Basics: Understanding of basic SEO principles and how to apply them to web development and content.
  • Web Analytics: Familiarity with tools like Google Analytics for measuring website performance.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of testing on major browsers and exposure to cross-browser/platform compatibility issues.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues.
Preferred Qualifications
  • JavaScript Knowledge: Experience with JavaScript for client-side scripting.
  • Familiarity with vetting and managing WordPress plugins
  • Experience with content strategy and marketing writing
  • Experience leading user trainings and workshops
