Position Description

Join a small team of IT professionals who help share the Harvard Art Museums’ world-class collections with audiences near and far through our public website.

Working closely with the senior architect, you will help maintain and continuously improve our public website, a high-quality and high-visibility product that is the gateway to the Harvard Art Museums’ collections for art enthusiasts, students, artists, and researchers around the world.   This position is an opportunity to create new features, improve accessibility, and enhance the user experiences of those different audiences by listening to humans, writing code, and participating in the digital lifecycles that are an integral part of 21st Century museum work. 

Please note: This is a two-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on business needs and continued funding.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Test, debug, and document existing web features and components, including advanced collections search tools and digital publishing platforms.
  • Prepare graphics for use on the web.
  • Write tests to help automate the development process.
  • Stay current on standards for web usability, design, coding, CSS, scripting languages, browser compatibility, and accessibility issues, with flexibility for learning new skills as needed.
  • Advise team about best practices for UX, site-flow. Conduct usability and UX testing.
  • Under supervision from the senior architect, respond to and resolve approved requests for site changes using a wide variety of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of two years of web design/development experience
  • Fluency with CSS3 and HTML5
  • Sample submissions of past web development work with application preferred
  • Excellent critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, and an ability to adapt to the rapidly changing technologies inherent in web development
  • Extensive experience with hand-coded HTML/CSS and a strong commitment to web standards.
  • Experience designing for human factors and user experience
  • Experience with source control systems (particularly Git) is a plus
  • Experience with JavaScript
  • Familiarity with Laravel or PHP is a plus
  • Familiarity with AplineJS or Vue is a plus
  • Familiarity with Harvard’s Digital Accessibility Policy and/or WCAG is a plus

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred

  • Work is performed in an office setting

The Harvard Art Museums , among the world’s leading art institutions, comprise three museums (the Fogg, Busch-Reisinger, and Arthur M. Sackler Museums) and four research centers: the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies, the Center for the Technical Study of Modern Art, the Harvard Art Museums Archives, and the Archaeological Exploration of Sardis.

The Harvard Art Museums is home to more than 250,000 artworks spanning eight millennia and an expansive range of materials and genres. The DIET/DIVR department is committed to providing high-quality, free access to the museum’s collections anywhere in the world by leading the museum’s open-access programs and developing a myriad of digital platforms and tools.

This position may start hybrid (some on-campus/some remote work), with the transition to a full-on campus in Cambridge if required by the department.  Work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
