Position Summary
The Web Developer works as part of a multidisciplinary web team to develop and support websites. Position is responsible for contributing to the development and implementation of web interfaces, providing custom code, modules and new development within Bernard Becker Medical Library.

This work will require being on call on evenings and weekends. It may require working a significant number of weekends. It will occasionally require travel to on and off-campus locations.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Creates new front-end and/or back-end web solutions to meet the functional and promotional needs of the library using modern web standards and best practices.
  • Program, test, debug, document, and implement new templates and WordPress plugins.
  • Provides technical support for, and regular updates and enhancements to, the library’s primary web templates, WordPress plugins, and email templates.
  • Provide technical support for, and regular updates and enhancements to, existing code, database, websites, and web templates. Train partners and staff on how to add/maintain website content.
  • Researches new web solutions based on emerging trends and best practices.
  • Leadership: Comfortable ensuring adherence to departmental standards. Act as a source of direction, training, and guidance for less experienced staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in computer science or a communications related area of study including courses in web programming.
  • 3+ years of professional experience developing websites using open source technology.
  • Can demonstrate examples of building custom web sites using WordPress.
  • Experience working with modern front-end tools/frameworks like SASS, CSS postprocessors, jQuery, React/Backbone, Grunt/Gulp, and others.
  • Experience writing custom server side applications in PHP, including writing code to interface with data in an SQL database like MySQL.
  • Knowledge of user experience principles.
  • Experience setting up and modifying web server configurations in Apache or Nginx.
  • The ability to create and test technical solutions while accounting for cross browser/device capabilities.
  • Comfort using command line tools.
  • Basic understanding of typography and design and the ability to create simple and usable interfaces.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in a customer-facing role.
  • Prior professional experience in a higher education is a plus.
  • Experience with LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) web development.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to web standards and professionalism.
  • A curiosity to constantly learn about new programming tools and techniques and a desire to share your knowledge with others.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously with only general supervision.
  • An aptitude to quickly and effectively adapt to new circumstances and technologies.
  • Ability to estimate the time it will take to complete a required task.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals who don’t have the same level of technical knowledge about a project.
  • Ability to work well independently and as a part of a team.
  • The willingness to work extra hours, when needed, to meet a project deadline.


Required Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in related field or three years of experience in a web development role.
  • Strong understanding of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript.
  • Experience programming with PHP or similar Object Oriented server side language.
  • Experience with WordPress, Linux/Apache, MacOS.
  • Experience using a version control system like Git or SVN.

Salary Range
$50,500.00 - $86,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
