Job Description:

The Web Designer and Producer develops and implements communications strategies for the Brown University Library’s websites and web applications, including the University Library’s flagship website, library.brown.edu. The Library's website and applications are a critical service for Brown's broad and diverse academic community. Reporting to the Head of Library Discovery Systems and Design, the Web Designer and Producer is part of a web team in the Brown University Library that reports up to the Director of Library Digital Technologies.

The Web Designer and Producer works to solve complex communications, user experience and technology challenges across the Brown University Library’s web presence. The Web Designer and Producer partners with colleagues across the library to assess goals and devise strategies designed to achieve the Library’s web communication objectives. The Web Designer and Producer serve as the primary front end web developer for a variety of web work. The Web Designer and Producer should be well-versed in design principles and techniques with a strong understanding of user experience, best practices and web standards. The Web Designer and Producer is responsible for creating and maintaining high-quality, efficient user interfaces and web content. The Web Designer and Producer has expert-level knowledge of site-building and theme-building within the context of Brown’s enterprise web content management systems, WordPress and Drupal.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7-10 years of professional web design/development experience required, or equivalent combination of education and professional web design/development experience
  • Required experience working with Drupal and/or WordPress CMS, including advanced theme-building development
  • Experience working in an higher education environment preferred; ideal candidate has 3+ years experience in an academic library
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with web design principles, guidelines, and best industry practices
  • Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience of the user-centered web development concepts and processes
  • Demonstrated ability of user interface design, evaluation, and technical maintenance
  • Proficient in developing front-end interfaces of websites and applications
  • Proficient in one or more programing languages for web and design development (e.g., PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript)
  • Demonstrated experience of content management systems including WordPress or Drupal
  • Experience in wireframing, prototyping, and using design tools
  • Ability to write and develop code based on mockups and ensure websites are user friendly, responsive, accessible, intuitive, and consistent
  • Experience with multimedia editing and tools
  • Knowledge of distributed version control including Git
  • Knowledge of Linux server environments and shell skills
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills, able to learn effectively and meet deadlines
  • Extensive knowledge of web accessibility standards, including WCAG and Section 508
  • Experience with Google Analytics, search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Self-motivated and able to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
