Position Overview

The Watson Library Night & Weekend Supervisor position is responsible for providing quality customer service support and supervision of service desk operations during specified night and weekend hours when classes are in session. The position is responsible for closing Watson library at midnight Sunday-Thursday during fall and spring semesters and 8 pm during the summer semester. Intersession work hours fall within reduced library operations hours and are determined by the supervisor.

In addition to overseeing circulation and related operations, the position provides research help support (in-person and virtual via chat) over specified time periods. This dynamic, user-focused position reports to the Watson Operations Manager and works collaboratively with Access Services and other library faculty/staff and student employees.

Job Description

70% Service Desk Management

  • Manages operations of the Watson service desk during the specified night and weekend hours.
  • Serves as the shift supervisor of Watson service desk student employees, overseeing and delegating tasks to maintain efficient operations and quality service to patrons.
  • Supervises desk interactions with adherence to library circulation policies and procedures and sharing related questions/issues with supervisor and library staff.
  • Consults with supervisor and appropriate staff regarding enforcement of library policies.
  • Produces borrower cards and processes library fines in accordance with library policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for building safety while working and closing the library per documented procedures, communicating any issues to supervisor and others as is appropriate.
  • Provides quality customer service to library patrons, answering their questions and providing referrals as appropriate.
  • Provides technology assistance to library patrons, troubleshooting software and hardware problems common to academic study and research activities.
  • Logs and records various work activities (interactions with patrons, shelving, book retrievals, etc.) consistently as per related library procedures.
  • Reports non-emergency building facilities issues to supervisor. Reports emergency facilities matters to Facilities Services, Public Safety and library staff per documented procedures.
  • Supervises student employees during assigned work hours. Provides leadership and direction to optimize service and regularly communicates student employee work performance matters with the student supervisor.
25% Research Help Duties
  • Assist patrons with general and in-depth reference and bibliographic questions in-person and online via chat.
  • Works assigned research help shifts and provides chat service support beyond scheduled hours when possible.
  • Consistently records research help transactions, takes part in ongoing training and regularly attends reference services meetings.

5% Other Duties as Assigned
  • Participates in special projects and/or duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Participates in training opportunities for job-specific and developmental purposes.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and three years of library or related experience OR high school diploma and five years of library or related experience.

  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising employees in a public service setting.
  • Library public service work experience with a strong commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Experience implementing building security, open/close procedures, and/or emergency procedures.
  • Knowledge of KU Libraries' collections and organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of common office technology and applications with experience troubleshooting basic problems.
