The primary goal of this position is to lead the establishment and maintenance of an environmental surveillance system, specifically to collect, analyze, process and display wastewater surveillance data. While much of the work will be focused on SARS-CoV-2 surveillance, this position will also work to develop methods of collection and analysis of other pathogens and offer recommendations for public health actions based on findings. This position will supervise other wastewater surveillance epidemiologists as well as provide leadership to other project staff working on wastewater surveillance.  

This is a full-time, project Epidemiologist 3 (Non-Medical) position.

 This project position is currently funded through July 31, 2023 and there is a potential for the project end date to be extended. 

Currently, this position may be located anywhere within the State of Washington.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, telework (mobile-work) is expected. When approved to return, the incumbent will work with their supervisor to identify an appropriate work schedule and balance, including telework and reporting to the Richland, Spokane, or Tumwater, WA duty station, whichever is closest to the incumbent, for work activities.

Skills/Eligibility:

Required Qualifications


  • Option 1:  Master’s degree or higher in epidemiology. 

  • Option 2:  Master’s degree or higher in public health or a closely allied field including 12 graduate quarter hours or equivalent (500 level or above) in epidemiology and 12 graduate quarter hours or equivalent in biostatistics.

AND


  • Two (2) or more years of experience working in a public health agency or similar setting and expertise in one or more statistical programs such as STATA, R, or SAS.

Desired Qualifications 


  • Demonstrated experience with the following:

    • Working in environmental epidemiology.
    • Working with local health jurisdiction disease investigators.
    • Strong data analysis and statistical software skills.
    • Experience with visualization and reporting tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
    • Experience with GIS
