About the Department
The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2,240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste/recycling/compost collections, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost effective services to the University, ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations, while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University. 
The Landscape Operations and Maintenance unit provides campus wide programs and services and support for the University’s 2000+ acres of campus landscape, 14.2 million square feet of buildings and the 33,000 students and 7500 Faculty and Staff that make up the campus population. These programs and services include landscape construction and maintenance and comprehensive solid waste, recycling and composting programs and services. Revenue supported programs and services are provided to: Transportation, Housing, Dining, Athletics, Campus Recreation and individual colleges and departments.
Essential Job Duties
NC State University is striving towards a 70% diversion rate and is an established leader in progressive programming focused on diverting resources from the landfill through source reduction, reuse, composting and recycling and creating a zero waste culture on campus. NC State’s Waste Reduction and Recycling (WRR) Department provides comprehensive, in-house collection services for over 20 different material streams and manages over 14 million pounds of materials annually. Through innovative and award-winning programming such as Zero Waste Workplace, NCSU’s Compost Facility and Research Cooperative, Special Event Recycling, Athletics Recycling and numerous student engagement programs, WRR is designing the future of what materials management looks like on a college campus.
The Outreach and Engagement Coordinator plays a pivotal role in helping the university reach its diversion goals by engaging the campus community to spread awareness and understanding of WRR’s programs and services and to create behavior change. Ideal candidate will have a passion for waste reduction, recycling and composting; a background in designing and implementing outreach and engagement campaigns and initiatives; experience with managing programs and/or events; and enjoys finding creative ways to engage diverse audiences through innovative programming and messaging. This position has several key areas of responsibility including:
DESIGN+CREATE
  • Design and implement education and outreach programs to customers, departments, campus partners, students and the campus community regarding WRR programs and services.
  • Design and create education and outreach platforms to encourage waste reduction and recycle right behaviors to increase participation and reduce contamination in recycling and diversion programs.
  • Develop educational campaigns to encourage reuse and source reduction to eliminate waste and encourage food waste reduction and composting on campus.
  • Develop, create and maintain marketing material such as website, recycling guides, reports, press releases and announcements for large scale distribution, signs, flyers, labels, digital media and educational promotional materials.
  • Provide the outreach and marketing materials in support of waste reduction programs during student Move In/Move Out such as Wolf Pack-N-Give donation program and the PackSmart campaign.

COMMUNICATE+ENGAGE
  • Manage social media campaigns and work with student interns to develop engaging content.
  • Develop campus-wide initiatives, engagement opportunities and promotions focused on special topics (for example contamination reduction, composting, bring-your-own and reducing single use plastics) or events (such as Earth Day, America Recycles Day, International Compost Awareness Week, etc).
  • Create and manage student/campus community engagement opportunities. Deliver campus presentations and represent WRR at speaking events, create waste diversion events and activities, guest lecture in classes, host tabling events throughout the year and create and manage volunteer events such as waste/recycling audits. 

MANAGE+EMPOWER
  • Manage and supervise several student interns and serve as staff liaison for the Zero Waste Wolves, a student organization focused on waste diversion on campus.
  • Provide guidance, data and/or mentorship to support student or class projects that involve waste diversion and recycling; including support for the Campus as a Classroom program and Make-a-Thon, NCSU’s Sustainability Innovation Competition. 
  • Manage the Zero Waste Wolfpack Program, NC State’s Athletic recycling and waste reduction program. Manage all recycling and composting programs at Carter Finley Stadium for football, including working with NCSU Athletics on program design and managing the program budget; and managing interns, volunteers and temporary staff for all home football games and certain other athletic events on campus. This position is the technical expert on waste reduction at athletic venues and represents WRR on NC State’s Athletics Sustainability Team (and advises on the Sustainable Wolfpack Program) and on the ACC Sports Sustainability Team
  • Assist with waste reduction, improving recycling and increasing composting at Zero Waste Events on campus. This includes large signature events like Packapolooza and smaller campus events that utilize temporary recycling and composting containers. 
  • Support the implementation of the Zero Waste Workplace in buildings on campus. Meet with customers, building occupants, department heads/leadership and University Housekeeping to develop a building-wide education and engagement plan to ensure program implementation success and participation.
Other Responsibilities
  • This position is required to work occasional weekends and evenings in conjunction with WRR programs and event schedules.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse groups and individuals and building partnerships.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules.
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating, organizing and implementing projects.
  • Soft skills are important for this position
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to present technical data and information in a creative format
  • Public speaking experience
  • Experience engaging with diverse audiences
  • Prefer experience with design software such as Adobe platforms (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and other graphic design, video and sound editing software.
  • Experience with programs related to waste reduction, recycling and environmental sustainability

  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • North Carolina driver’s license required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
