UW Facilities manages the University’s buildings, infrastructure and land, with more than 1,100 employees in a variety of fields. The Asset Management group includes Capital & Space Management, Real Estate, Sustainability and other teams responsible for planning and workload management. The Operations group includes Project Delivery, Maintenance & Construction, Campus Energy, Utilities & Operations, Building Services, Transportation Services and Safety. Supporting these groups, as well as the separate Emergency Management team, are the Business Intelligence & Information Technology group and the Finance & Administration group.

Building Services delivers Custodial Services to the UW Seattle campus that provides clean and sanitary environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors and manages the campus-wide comprehensive recycling & solid waste management program.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a Waste Collector, UW Recycling.  This position is under the direction of UW Recycling Program Operations Manager and the hours are Monday–Friday, 5 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Drive rear load packer truck or box truck to collect solid waste and recyclables on campus
• Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections and minor service on the assigned vehicle (such as checking tires and filling windshield fluid)
• Use, maintain and replace assigned personal protective equipment
• Follow a scheduled or authorized modified route
• Collect garbage, cardboard, cans, bottles and commingled recyclable materials from recycling containers and/or collection locations located around the University's central campus
• Update mobile web application indicating status of each route stop and work order (completed, tripped, contaminated, etc.)
• Load contents into packer truck, box truck, pick-up truck and/or collection hopper
• Clean area around containers, sweep up debris and spills after servicing dumpsters
• Assure materials being transported comply within the legal load limits
• Off-load waste at approved City of Seattle disposal facilities and/or other designated locations
• Obtain receipt/disposal ticket and turn in to Program Operations Manager at the end of each work day
• Report malfunctions, repair requirements, hazardous conditions or unsafe work practices to the supervisor
• Report any accidents and/or safety violations to the appropriate authority in a timely manner
• Ensure all safety measures appropriate for operation of assigned vehicle are consistently and efficiently applied
• Provide ongoing information to supervisor regarding containers requiring extensive maintenance (i.e., graffiti removal, repainting, damage repairs, etc.)
• Provide ongoing information to supervisor regarding the performance of vendors the University has selected to provide additional waste collection services beyond the duties of UW waste collectors
• Share updates regarding safety and contamination during daily team huddle meeting
• Participate in the development and implementation of goals, performance measures, and continuous improvement of service delivery
• Operate a smartphone and respond within 15 minutes
• Clean interior and exterior of vehicle and equipment as required
• Remove posters, stickers and/or graffiti from containers
• Assist litter collectors as needed with waste disposal
• Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements include:

• Ability to read and write;
• Possession of a valid State driver’s license;
• Physical ability to perform heavy outdoor work.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Desired:

• One (1) year of full-time experience as a truck driver, similar work OR equivalent education/experience
• Familiarity with principles and practices of job site safety, potential job hazards, and state and local regulations including applicable waste regulation
• Ability to follow verbal instructions, and communicate in English regarding the use of supplies and equipment;
• Physical ability to work with heavy equipment and materials;
• Ability to communicate effectively with peers, supervisors and customers.

Conditions of Employment:

Maintain valid Washington state driver’s license Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with the air brake restriction removed
• Pre-employment drug test is required coupled with participation in an ongoing random drug/alcohol testing program in compliance with Federal DOT regulations
• Wear approved hearing protection and other personal protective equipment as provided by employer
• Approved safety shoes must be provided at the expense of the employee and worn on the job
• Lifting, pushing or pulling 0-50 lbs frequently; 51-75 lbs. frequently; 76-100 lbs frequently; 100 lbs+ occasionally with assistance
• Must be able to work in a non-smoking environment
• Regular and predictable attendance is required
