Summary of Duties:

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) Chief Operating Officer (COO) serves as a senior administrative officer for the VTH and as an executive liaison to the College of Veterinary Medicine and campus units. Reporting to the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, the COO is a key executive leadership position in the college and will work in tandem with the Chief Medical Office (CMO, Medical Director). 

The COO will balance day-to-day operations while leading strategic development for the long-term success of the VTH. The COO advises higher level management on a wide range of operational, financial, staff personnel, programmatic, facilities, compliance, and academic support issues. 

  • Directly supervises 7 staff with total indirect reports of 35 and has joint responsibility (along with VTH academic/veterinarian leadership) for all VTH employees and general operations to achieve broadly stated goals with an organization-wide impact. 

  • Responsible for complex planning, analysis, systems and policy development, and managing an annual budget of approximately $16 million derived from client revenue, and state and professional fee teaching allocations.

  • Develops and implements operational policies and procedures from an administrative standpoint while providing operational advising to VTH Medical Director for all policies impacting hospital operations. 

  • Provides oversight and assessment of facility needs, space utilization, and maintenance requests.

  • The COO and Medical Director will work in partnership and be responsible for instilling an inclusive, inspired, and productive culture aligned with our mission and values. 

  • The COO will work with the Medical Director to deepen the VTH’s commitment to customer service, patient outcomes, and excellence in teaching, through innovative processes and programs. 

The Washington State University (WSU) VTH is the largest teaching laboratory within WSU and is the primary educational location for delivery of curricular content to approximately 140 students in their fourth year of the professional veterinary degree program at the CVM. It also supports core and elective course objectives for the first three pre-clinical years of the program and provides a training ground for over 40 specialty interns and residents seeking post-DVM certification in a variety of veterinary medical fields. The VTH offers over 20 specialty service units ranging from Small and Large Animal Surgery to Oncology to Medical Imaging. It operates a full-service Pharmacy and a Clinical Pathology laboratory which further the educational and service missions of the organization. In 2023, the VTH served a client base of over 16,000 small animals and over 3,000 large animals. Nearly 40 faculty provide clinical service in the VTH, supported by 41 licensed veterinary technicians, 34 veterinary residents, 18 veterinary interns, 72 support personnel, and over 150 temporary employees on the Pullman campus.


Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and six (6) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least three (3) years of managerial experience. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment.

  • Operational management experience in veterinary or medical hospital or large clinical practice.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply excellent collaborative leadership and management skills in a complex organization.

  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Experience with utilizing electronic records management system or other complex hospital related management system.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in business administration (MBA), Healthcare Administration (MHA), Medical Management (MMM), American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), or related field or equivalent training.

  • Experience in providing administrative leadership for professional degree education or clinical service.

  • Experience conducting financial analysis and budget planning in a complex organizational structure.

  • Experience managing personnel in a complex organizational structure.

  • Experience managing medical facilities and procurement of equipment.

Monthly Salary:

$9,166.67 - $11,666.67 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position. Successful candidates typically begin up to mid-point of the salary range.
