Job Summary

As the operational dyad to the Chief Quality Officer, the Vice President for Quality and Safety provides broad strategic direction, planning, leadership and management for all aspects of adult, pediatric, ambulatory and affiliate/partner quality improvement, hospital epidemiology and infection control, analytics and clinical effectiveness, and clinical documentation integrity. The incumbent is responsible for meeting or exceeding the institutional goals set for Quality across UCSF Health and to external reporting bodies.

Specific areas of oversight and responsibility include the following: 

  • Adult Quality Improvement and Safety

  • Benioff Children’s Quality & Safety in SF and Oakland

  • Ambulatory Quality

  • Affiliates & Partners Quality (e.g. Dignity Hospitals, Marin General Hospital, Sonoma Valley Hospital, etc.)

  • Hospital Epidemiology & Infection Control

  • Clinical Documentation Integrity

  • Analytics & Clinical Effectiveness

  • Health Equity

  • Regulatory & Pay for Performance Programs

  • Public Reporting & Ranking (e.g. US News, AHA, CMS Stars, Vizient Quality & Accountability)

  • True North Quality & Safety Pillar Strategic Priorities

    The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Required Qualifications

At least 5 years of increasingly responsible management and leadership experience in a large academic medical center with a proven track record in quality improvement, program development, and related planning (ideally in a multi-site hospital system).
At least 5 years of executive level experience with broad health-system level responsibilities.
Master’s degree in Nursing or related healthcare field (e.g., MPH, MBA, etc.)
or an equivalent combination of clinical education and experience required.
In depth hospital management experience, with demonstrated success in quality improvement, patient safety, program development and related planning.
Advanced skills in developing strategic plans, creating benchmarks, integrating programs, building staff competencies, organizing operations, and fiscal management.
Advanced leadership and fiscal management skills, with the ability to create and maintain a goal-oriented climate of teamwork, collaboration and consistent achievement of objectives.
Advanced analytical, critical-thinking, organizational, and problem solving skills, with in-depth ability to develop and pursue goals, integrate complex and sometimes disparate functions and develop and apply innovative solutions. Advanced knowledge of all relevant healthcare information technology for functions within areas of responsibility. Maintains knowledge of best practices, relevant systems and data management techniques and methodologies. Demonstrated knowledge of a broad scope of relevant regulatory requirements, as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing and compliance environments.


Preferred Qualifications

Experience with LEAN methodologies and/or knowledge and support of LEAN principles preferred.
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California (if Master’s in Nursing) preferred.
