JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President for Network Development & Clinician Growth for Duke Health is responsible for the evaluation of prospects to integrate physician practices into Duke Health using various partnership frameworks such as Clinical Integrated Networks, Shared Services, Joint Ventures, Community Practice Models, and conventional employment setups.

The primary objective of this role is to significantly enhance clinical capacity through the alignment and acquisition of mid-to-large-scale physician practices. Additionally, the incumbent will spearhead the clinical development of new facilities and the establishment of novel practices within Duke Health. Emphasis will be placed on expanding capacity while mitigating internal competition and minimizing conflicts.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Network Development and New Practice Opportunities:  Lead the strategic alignment of ambulatory growth plans for Duke Health, encompassing the implementation of creative options such as technology solutions, shared services, joint ventures, community practice affiliations, and physician and Advanced Practice Clinician (APP) acquisitions and employment models.
  • Ambulatory and Duke Health Systemness:  Play a pivotal role in Duke Health's enterprise-wide planning for Ambulatory Strategy, driving the development and execution of strategies that harmonize Community Duke Health Integrated Practice with overarching enterprise goals. Coordinate closely with clinical departments and service line leads to ensure seamless coordination.
  • Patient Segmentation Analysis and Planning: Formulate comprehensive care delivery plans tailored to diverse patient populations across the primary service area, state, region, and nation. Focus network development efforts primarily in the Greater Triangle Area of North Carolina, with a particular emphasis on Wake County, while considering other strategic geographic regions to enhance patient access to care. Oversee negotiation, monitoring, and performance tracking of professional services physician agreements across Duke University Health System, Duke LifePoint, and other area hospitals.
  • Clinical Program Support Planning: Develop and implement tactical programs and plans across Duke University Health System (DUHS), Duke Health Integrated Practices (DHIP), and associated entities to bolster clinical objectives and outcomes. This includes enhancing access to care, expanding services, developing specialty-focused high-value programs, and creating bundled care offerings.
  • Network Management:  Ensure effective coordination and communication with Duke Health Integrated Practice senior leadership across all projects and responsibilities. Oversee practice due diligence, affiliation models, alignment, integration, and post-integration support to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and procedures. This encompasses financial budgeting, planning, accreditation, quality assurance, safety protocols, medical staff requirements, credentialing, and other essential functions critical for successful practice integration.

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Work requires organizational, analytical and communication skills acquired through the completion of a Bachelor's degree program in a business or healthcare-related field. A Masters Health Administration (MHA) or Masters Business Administration (MBA) with health care concentration or equivalent is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of healthcare experience in physician network development, physician practice management/contracting, managed care strategies, group practice operations, hospital operations, management and/or planning. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Healthcare Leadership Experience specializing in network development and physician alignment within a healthcare organization.
  • Strategic Planning Skills which includes the ability to evaluate partnership opportunities, assess market trends, and develop long-term growth strategies for physician practices.
  • Business Development Expertise in the healthcare sector to include a proven track record of successful physician practice acquisitions, partnership negotiations, and network expansion initiatives and an overall understanding of key consumer driven programs (nationally and locally) affecting healthcare delivery as well as a thorough understanding of relevant regulatory issues related to physician network development.
  • Clinical Understanding to include a comprehensive grasp of clinical operations to effectively drive clinical development initiatives and address the needs of healthcare clinicians.
  • Financial Acumen in order to analyze the financial viability of partnership opportunities, evaluate return on investment, and develop sustainable growth plans within budget constraints.
  • Change Management proficiency and the ability to navigate organizational complexities while driving alignment and growth initiatives.
  • Communication and Relationship-Building Skills for fostering collaboration with internal stakeholders, external partners, and physician groups.
