Job Summary

Responsible for the direction and management of healthcare services for UCSF Health Adult Services inpatient and outpatient services, the integration and coordination of healthcare services across the system and our affiliate partners, and the reconciliation of the goals and priorities for a large number of competing programs. This includes ensuring that the facility operates efficiently and maintains established medical and healthcare standards.

The Chief Operating Officer, Adult Services (COO, Adult Services) is responsible for providing oversight across several clinical services departments (medical, diagnostic and therapeutic) and plays an integral role in defining and implementing UCSF's strategic growth endeavors. Administrative oversight includes developing objectives and policies, reviewing organization's budget, evaluating performance of departments under direction as well as performance of key management personnel, and evaluating requests for new or additional services or programs. Activities also include contributing to strategic planning and directing all activities of clinical professional services departments through management staff. The COO, Adult Services is tasked with the financial and operational performance of their areas of oversight, ensuring that services operate efficiently and that they provide the highest quality of care and service.

Department Description

This position represents Adult Services needs within the organization and plays a key leadership role in the planning and implementing customer service focused efforts, and space planning activities, including find new spaces and/or forms of revenue for inpatient and outpatient functions.

The COO, Adult Services supports the Senior Vice President/President Adult Services in directing the strategic planning and financial oversight, and business plan development processes for the following areas:

  •  Heart and Vascular
  •  Gynecology SERVICES
  •  Neurosciences Services
  •  Sleep/Pulmonary Function
  •  Radiology Services
  •  Rehabilitative Services and Neurodiagnostic Services
  •  Case Management
  •  Endoscopy
  •  Perioperative
  •  Housekeeping
  •  Patient Food Services
  •  Facilities
  •  Security

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive executive management experience in a complex health care organization.
  • Expert knowledge of health care delivery models, business and strategic planning, financial management, program development implementation and organizational development.
  • Highly advanced ability to work collaboratively and effectively with medical center executives, campus leadership, external agencies, and other academic medical centers and healthcare institutions.
  • Expert ability to establish and utilize metrics to drive excellence, support operations and facilitate integration.
  • Expert knowledge of capital and operating budget development and management, financial analysis, and reporting techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements as well as legislative, accreditation, licensing, and compliance environments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Highly advanced interpersonal skills.
  • Expert negotiation and influencing skills.
  • Highly advanced ability to build and maintain a climate of trust that inspires commitment to achieve organization goals.
  • Bachelor's degree in business, healthcare administration, or clinical degree and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in business, health administration or clinical degree preferred.
