JOB SUMMARY

The Vice President of Ambulatory Clinician Services will lead strategic initiatives to establish Duke Health as a premier national destination for clinicians. This role involves overseeing support functions to offer concierge services to all physicians and advanced practice clinicians within Duke Health. Responsibilities include managing recruitment, contracting, onboarding, retention, and offboarding processes. Additionally, the Vice President will collaborate closely with department leaders to coordinate financial plans and clinical resources, including scheduling and space allocation, to enhance services in alignment with Duke Health's strategic objectives.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead and oversee teams responsible for clinician recruitment, onboarding, retention, offboarding, payroll and benefit support, ensuring the delivery of top-tier services through streamlined processes tailored to meet the real-time needs of physicians, Advanced Practice Clinicians (APPs), and clinical departments and service lines.
  • Collaborate with finance and key leaders across Duke Health to assess and optimize clinician compensation programs, aligning total rewards with organizational objectives concerning patient access, value-based care, care variability, and other strategic priorities.
  • Develop and manage a comprehensive reporting system to track hiring outcomes across all clinical departments, service lines, and the health system, including metrics such as time to fill, time to contract, and barriers to successful practice ramp-up.
  • Serve as the expert on physician and APP workforce market trends and considerations for Duke Health, staying informed through engagement with professional societies, external resources, publications, and consultants to ensure Duke Health's strategies evolve in response to changing market dynamics.
  • Partner with department leadership, Chief Department Administrators, and Chairs to identify and address barriers to clinician engagement at Duke Health, leading the development and implementation of strategies and tactics to reduce clinician turnover.
  • Establish a data-driven approach to clinician workforce retention, developing infrastructure to systematically identify issues with service, structure, or systems that may contribute to burnout and turnover. Communicate findings to clinical leadership and support implementation of improvement tactics.
  • Design and manage systems to analyze the full lifecycle of a new clinician hire, ensuring alignment between actual volume, practice composition, and services provided with strategic plans and needs. Utilize insights from this analysis to inform future clinician recruitment and onboarding strategies.

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field such as healthcare administration, business administration, or a related discipline is typically required. A master's degree, such as an MBA or MHA, is preferred.
  • 10 years of demonstrated progressively responsible healthcare leadership experience.

  • The ideal candidate should possess a blend of leadership, strategic planning, financial acumen, data analysis, and communication skills, coupled with a deep understanding of the healthcare industry and a track record of success in driving clinician recruitment and retention initiatives.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • Leadership Experience within healthcare organizations, particularly in areas related to clinician recruitment, retention, and support services. Previous experience managing teams and overseeing complex operations is essential.
  • Strategic Planning Skills and planning abilities for developing and executing initiatives to position Duke Health as a premier destination for clinicians. This includes the ability to align recruitment, compensation, and retention strategies with organizational goals and industry trends.
  • Financial Acumen to include proficiency in financial analysis and budget management to evaluate and optimize clinician compensation programs. The ideal candidate should understand the financial implications of compensation decisions on patient access, value-based care initiatives, and overall organizational performance.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting to monitor hiring outcomes, identifying trends, and evaluate the effectiveness of clinician recruitment and retention efforts by utilizing workforce analytics tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of Healthcare Landscape including trends in clinician workforce dynamics, regulatory requirements, and emerging issues affecting all aspects of the clinician lifecycle from need identification through recruitment and retention.
  • Communication and Collaboration Skills needed to engage with stakeholders across Duke Health, including clinical department leaders, finance professionals, and external partners. The ability to build relationships and influence decision-making is critical, as well as the ability to lead and deliver results across a highly complex and matrixed organization Ability to easily and regularly lead complex and charged discussions related to resources, budgets, benefits and other sensitive topics.
  • Change Management Expertise for driving initiatives to address barriers to clinician engagement, reduce turnover, and improve retention outcomes.
