Essential Duties

  • Facilitates maintenance of animal care department holdings by performing inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs including electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work (i.e., replacing solenoid valves, switches, relays, and thermocouples on specialized equipment; rewiring appliances; constructing partitions; installing pipe and related plumbing fixtures)
  • Performs general painting, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs (i.e., unstopping clogged sinks, drains, and garbage disposals; resetting circuit breakers; replacing cord caps, buffer switches, and light switches; minor repairs to heating, refrigeration, air condition units, and other electrical equipment; repairs damaged walls and doors; painting; replaces windows; refinishes and repairs furniture)
  • Liaises with ASU Facilities Management and/or outside vendors and accompanies them when working in the vivaria
  • Prioritizes work orders so as to minimally impact the animal care department’s day-to-day operations and investigator’s projects while maintaining biosecurity of each vivarium
  • Requests and reviews proposals for work from entities outside of the department, researching and recommending appropriate solutions
  • Procures parts, supplies, and services for equipment and projects
  • Reconciles statements for purchasing card used to obtain necessary parts and supplies for maintenance and repairs   
  • Maintains reports of work requests and preventative maintenance and submits to management
  • Inspects and prepares vivaria infrastructure for site visits (i.e., AAALACi, CDC, USDA)
  • Conducts repairs as mandated by the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee semi-annual inspection findings
  • When possible, fixes the rack washers, tunnel washer, autoclaves, and specialized housing units
  • Escorts contractors (i.e., CBS, CEM, and FACMAN) for any repairs needed within the vivaria
  • Performs monthly maintenance on the rack and tunnel washers, autoclaves, and carts
  • Performs the routine maintenance on the RO units and dechlorinators
  • Replaces burnt out light bulbs or failed ballasts/fixtures
  • Installs specialty equipment for researchers within the vivarium
  • Patches and paints within vivaria
  • Realigns door frames and adjusts closures to maintain proper door functioning
  • Builds and maintains the water lines from the RO units to the housing units
  • Greases or replaces casters or wheels on carts and racks
  • Installs office equipment and other “hangers” throughout facilities
  • Locates and purchases replacement parts

Minimum Qualifications

Six years of general maintenance and repair experience to include plumbing, electrical, and HVAC  & exhaust; experience coordinating contractors or others for repair and/or maintenance in these areas; experience designing, building, and implementing unique solutions for specific requests, such as animal housing structures or watering systems; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
A current Arizona Type D driver's license is required upon employment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working with or repairing laboratory equipment for vivarium (e.g., cage washer, autoclave).
  • Experience in project management for facility and equipment repair.
  • Experience with Microsoft applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook), and Workday.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills.

Working Environment

  • Activities regularly require working in facilities that are overseen by the CDC, have live animals, and have active research studies.
  • Works in areas that contain hazardous materials (i.e., infectious agents, chemicals, radiation);
  • Regular use of power and hand tools, forklift, hand trucks, and other standard repair and maintenance equipment.
  • On- and off-campus use of university vehicle.
  • Some work is performed in a warehouse facility with minimal climate control.
  • This job includes long periods of standing and low-demand walking.
  • Frequent bending and reaching.
  • Lifting, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 lbs may be required.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential duties.

  • Negative TB test
