University Web & Design collaborates with campus communication professionals to establish creative vision for university communications. The office provides a suite of services to support implementation of that vision including collaborative planning and management, concepts, design and web communications strategy.
Position Summary
The Visual Designer serves as a user experience and interface designer for web-based communications and marketing projects and systems. They will design and layout a variety of digital communication and marketing projects (e.g., microsites, proprietary university templates, digital graphics, etc.). The designer will create concepts, UX wireframes and hi-fi UI mock-ups as well as contribute general design expertise to other mediums, including print publications.
Conditions of Employment
  • There is an occasional need for work outside of typical business hours. Some projects and publications are tied to the academic calendar and university events and require work on evenings and weekends.
  • This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Exceptional knowledge of graphic design principles and the creative process.
  • Significant work experience and success in producing thoughtful and compelling design concepts for web and other digital applications.
  • Expert knowledge and ability to consult on responsive web design, including intuitive breakpoint identification.
  • Ability to advise on differences in content approach across various devices (e.g. mobile vs. desktop).
  • Ability to learn and adapt to the constraints of web content management systems.
  • Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.
  • Mastery of key Adobe Creative Suite products (Photoshop and Illustrator).
  • Proficiency with modern UX/UI software (Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD), with an understanding of component creation and advanced prototyping.
  • Experience with office productivity tools.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills with a commitment to excellence and an eye for detail.
  • Exceptional customer service, presentation, problem-solving and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with print publication design and proficiency with Adobe InDesign.
  • Familiarity with the professional printing process (e.g. packaging art files for printing presses, digital vs. offset printing, etc.).
  • Experience working in a higher education.
