Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) invites applications for a three-year Visiting Professor (rank open) to begin Fall 2024. A Ph.D. in any discipline in the liberal arts is required, with a particular interest in literature, the social sciences and mathematics. Successful candidates will be committed to innovative undergraduate teaching at a liberal arts college with a diverse student body; excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion; maintain an active research program; contribute to the general education curriculum; and engage with the life of the College.

BPI offers an associate degree and bachelor’s degrees in social studies, literature and humanities, and mathematics along with concentrations or specializations in public health, education and biology. We seek candidates who will provide academic stability and cohesion for required introductory courses of the BPI curriculum and who will provide academic depth and breadth through elective courses in their field of study. Candidates should be excited by rigorous college classroom teaching and excel in discussion-heavy courses that demand active participation of all students.

Full time teaching for BPI is defined as two twice-weekly courses in the fall and spring semesters and two additional courses taught during any semester including summer. In addition to offering courses, Visiting Professors are expected to offer three guest lectures at various BPI campuses annually and a service equivalent of one week annually. Additional participation in BPI faculty workshops, curricular meetings, classroom observations and engagement in the life of BPI is expected.

Please note that the prison is a location of BPI courses rather than the subject matter of our courses, which reflect the breadth of liberal arts education on the main campus of Bard College. This position does not include an opportunity to conduct research within the prisons or to approach students as research subjects.

Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000; full-time, exempt, open rank
This salary range reflects the College’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity. Additionally, this position is contingent upon secured funding.
